http://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/article/a-bird-in-hand-is-worth-two-in-the-bush

This is a nice read. I think that she is not alone in her shoes. Many went through similar situations. The truth though, "a bird in hand is worth two in the bush." We always stretch out our hands for something far when what is near might be more affordable and even better. The saying is applicable to many life situations.

I can relate to her story as well. I failed Matehmatics, Physics and Chemistry in High school and was denied a visa for that reason. Like countless others, I went home and carved a cocoon around myself and acted like a fool for a year and half. I finally got my senses back and did private o'level maths and the rest as they say is history...that old level math exam (I got a credit in it!) was one of my biggest achievements in school because it unlocked so many doors for me Alhamdullillah. May be I ought to frame it like a diploma...lol!!

mansa, how could you fail math, physics and chemistry, what's the problem?
But I applaud your persistence. The writer in the example above needed to persist in his endeavor too rather than withdrew into a self-inflicted depression after failing to obtain a travel visa. It is important that she finally realised that she needed to explore local opportunities to develop herself while still keeping her eyes on further training abroad.
She seems to suggest that she was denied a travel visa for no reason. I think that is a general misconception among many visa applicants. There are procedures and requirements for visa applications and most often those procedures and requirements must be strictly met in order for a visa to be issued. Many embassies even provide a document that outlines a step-by-step requirements (and documents) that must be met and submitted by applicants. Once this is done a visa is generally issued immediately. She could have taken her time and follow the appropriate procedure and requirements and try again. That is called persistence; that is the example you have demonstrated with your O' Level math, physics and chemistry.

Kay, you know sometimes I ask myself that problem. When I finished middle school (Saint Augustine's), I intended on specializing in the Arts subjects and somehow an uncle convinced me to do Commerce instead. As almost everyone I knew then wanted a career in accounting, banking etc and therefore flooded to Arts specialty so I went along.

Well it turned out the Science program at Saints needed 80 students for two science classes and they were far short on that number so the likes of me based on middle school results in maths and science were drafted (forcibly) by Mrs Renner and co into science. Failing mathematics was inexusable, but I never had the motivation to try hard in chemistry and physics. In hindsight, I could have attended half a days worth of schooling and still get to where I am today.

However, my favourite mathematical concept and also the one I understood most to this day is the Pythagorean theorem.

Mrs. Renner was principal after the late Sam Njie. I believe she has her own school now if I am correct...she was also a former (1963) Miss Gambia or runner up...May be other members could tell us more about her. Man she ruled with an iron fist! She told me my dad (who was his class mate at Yundum college) to find me another school if I did not want to do science.

thanks bro Mansa.

I do not know her in person, but factually her name was a common mention by the Saint Aug's boys. Once you mentioned her name, i was taken back.

Have a blessed day!

I was there between 1992-1998. What subject(s) did you teach?
