IFJ PRESS RELEASE
Two Gambian journalists released, a third still in detention

Two Gambian journalists released, a third still in detention
21 April 2006 The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) welcomes the release on April 20 of the general manager, of the Independent Newspaper in the Gambia, Madi Ceesay and the paper#146;s editor-in-chief, Musa Saidykan. The two journalists were held incommunicado detention for 3 weeks, without being charged.
Meanwhile, another reporter with the Independent Newspaper, Lamin Fatty was also arrested on April 10 and he is still in detention.
"We call on the organizations for the defence of press freedom and the civil society in The Gambia and in the West African sub-region to maintain the pressure on the government of President Yayah Jammeh so that he intervenes for the release without delay of Lamin Fatty and the immediate and unconditional reopening of the newspaper" said Gabriel Baglo the Director of the Africa Office of the IFJ.

Background

On April, 10 The Independent Newspaper reporter Lamin Fatty was arrested by the Police Intervention Unit at his house.

On March 28, the Managing Director of the Independent Newspaper and President of the Gambia Press Union, Madi Ceesay and the Editor -in-Chief of the Independent Newspaper and Vice- President of the Gambia Press Union, Musa Saidykan, were picked up at their office in Kanifing during a raid by the Police Intervention Unit. Some members of staff were also arrested, but they were later released while Madi and Musa were transferred to the headquarters of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

The IFJ is concerned that the raid on the newspaper has more to do with stifling the voice of impartial journalism in a country where the media have suffered in the wake of political instability. An IFJ mission to the Gambia last December, marking the one-year anniversary of the assassination of the editor of The Point newspaper, Deyda Hydara, concluded that the media in The Gambia is under siege and the attacks on the media remain unpunished.

I would encourage all who can and are able to do this, to send letters protesting the detention of Lamin Fatty.

This will be the first test case of the draconian media bill. Publishing false information under the bill is a serious crime and penalties very severe. If found gulity, the man could be behind bars for some time beyond that of fieldmarshal Baba

“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.”

The guy did not publish any thing false. He only repeated yaya's utterances. Maybe it was the slip of yaya's tongue to make such remarks about his wealth.

DUFFBI. He has already dug his own grave. He said he has no advisers, no wonder that is why he is always making incredible mistakes. Diabolical!!
