LESSON 1. I having been to Gambia many times over the years Im now aware of the airport scams. Last time I arrived my lugage was searched and ask to pay a D100 tax as I had a portable DVD player that was for my own use which I pointed out all to no avail the tax was still demanded. So I ask for a reciept and said when I leave and show them I still had the DVD player would the tax be refunded at which point with a wave of the hand was told to go. So lesson learnt ask for a reciept and a refund on departure.
LESSON 2.There is no rules on the amount of duty free or localy purchased goods you can take out of the country. If you are over the limit for your countries destination you will be approached by head of security who will point this out and tell you he is obliged to take your name and fax the customs control of your country and advise them of the fact. However he says he will not do this if you give him a sum of money. £20 £30 or £40 was the surgested sum. My responce was I would sooner pay any additional money to customs control in my country which would go to my government to help my country than put money in his pocket. At which point he left. So the lesson is dont be intimidated by this man

my response to this, take his bage number and advise that you will make report to the NIA or local police station. If possible take his picture. Talk loudly, if you are travelling with a group, call the representative. BRING ATTENTION TO THIS NONSENSE. now onder Gambia is getting a bad rep among holidaymakers. |

I have never been harassed at Banjul Airport, neither was I last month. Was it because I look so innocent? Or was it because our flight was several hours late and luggage for 189 passengers (1/3 Swedish-Gambians) has to be scanned through quickly so the staff can go home? No questions about mobiles or anything at all. (Customs at Arlanda Airport early in the morning is a joke, the staff had not even arrived yet, the gates were open, free passage for everyone.)
Everybody was happy to see me. My favourite family was happy about the clothes, bags and bling-bling, my favourite O was happy about a pair of shoes and a rugsack for his school boy, my favourite B(umster) was happy about a mobile and his mother about a bag of rice. I was happy to hear my favourite J ask ”Don´t you remember me? I gave you a Gambian name last year! You used to walk to the bridge.”, and happy to hear my favourite little boy , standing in Kotu Stream with water up to his waist, fishing, call ”Toubab! Naka deff!”
Another day he and four other boys had been hiding under the bridge and just popped up. I took some photos, all they looked so serious. How they giggled at the pictures! I wonder - what will these boys be doing in ten years from now?
