I am not sure whether the name is the right one for this but there is a believe that certain people have the capability of seeing what ordinary people cannot see. That they are gifted with an inner vision due to the supernatural capacity of their brains. The wollof call this attribute "Yaabopa" and the mandinka "Kungfanunteh". The literary meaning is steeped in the believe that these people have wide brains or sharp brains which enables them to percieve what others cannot see . These kunfanuntehs are reportedly able to see the activities of the witches and even have the ability of identifying witches.Using their powers they fight the witches , they could do every thing the witches do but are not involved in the activities of witches.I remember the fright I get when ever I meet some one who is alleged to a be a witch ; alone in the mango gardens or deserted streets. I would timidly walk pass them and run as fast I can from that venue ,with my heart literally jumping out of my chest . I now feel so embarashed about this but truly speaking this was something I beleived in .When I was a kid I heard some people claim that if one takes the white stuff that comes out of a dog's eye and rub it on one's eyes you will be endowed with that power. I tried it but can tell all who want to know that I saw no extraordinary being or activity in fact I see nothing strange at all. It did not work for me at all. With this kind of believe running in our society from childhood to mature adulthood, one can see where this sordid matter is coming from. It is steeped in our societal beliefs and has been a source of great embarashment to those accused of witchcraft by these kunfanuntehs, or by spiteful people as the case may be. Living in a country with a leader who practices sorcery and exploits the fears of the society which has these beliefs leaves many in a quandary. Surely the problem did not start with Yahya Jammeh but his current system of ruling , which exploits all means at his disposal to subjugate the people , has compounded matters. We are now living in very grave danger and I cannot see any end in sight for this terrible affair.May Allah save our nation and it's people from this evil . I pray also that Halifa stays safe under custody from all evil acts , including tortures ; noting that even the mere detention itself is enough torture for an innocent man. I have read here about the Governments bearing the responsibilty for crime prevention and that includes detection of alleged crimes, that fact nothwithstanding , we as citizens are not precluded from finding out or investigating crimes committed against us. It is a citizens right to know who is offending him or her and if there is no police officer close to the scene they can arrest and hand over the culprit to the police. Where the police are abdicating their responsibility in discharging that role I find nothing wrong in Halifa investigating the acts and making sure that they are documented for redress. I also note that Halifa as we speak is not a NAM but a former NAM. That point besides ; he is the leader of a political party , a citizen who cares and is concerned about the welfare of the common man, which it seems to me is not the case as far as the Government is concerned. Talking about the enemy in his case I wonder who that might be; because Halifa was not hiding the fact that he was going to find out who is doing this witch hunt and asked openly for the government to come out with a declaration on the matter. This led to the one made by the Army Command which I said was just utter and complete trash. They are implicated and this arrest of Halifa Sallah is prima facie evidence of that fact. Again if they are not involved why are they stopping Halifa by arresting him, are they hiding something that his investigations would expose. I think the answer to this is plain for all to see, we can if only we are willing , see that this is a naked misuse of the law and abuse of power. It has simply got to stop .

Thanks Kaanibaa for your post. The truth of the matter is that Jammeh is a crude savage. He is living in the medieval period. The belief in "kunfanunteh" is a crap just as the belief in witchcraft. The two are the opposite sides of the same superstitious coin of stigma and social persecution of innocent, usually older and lonely people. There is no scientific exoplanation to both. There is actually a sensory approach that can enable some (actually most)people to get a small glimpse into the future (the theories of this phenomenon is beyond the scope of this discussion, so please allow me to skip that), but that is not as elaborate as is suggested in witch-craft and "kunfanuntehs".
People who belief that discharges from the dog's eyes (lachrymal discharges) will enhance their vision in fact did not know that dogs themselves have a very poor eye sight. Dogs mainly rely on their sense of smell.
Halifa is a political leader, a journalist, and a head of a social science research institute, I believe with credentials such as Gambian Identity cards, licenses, and registration documents. What he did is reasonably within the scope of his status and function.
Halifa's arrest is a clear indication that Jammeh is behind the witch-craft practitioners; and that while Jammeh is trying to chain Gambians in bondage (mental slavery), Halifa is trying to liberate them. Jammeh is attempting to get into the psyche of Gambians and control them from there so that they will not be able to think on their own free will even during their most private moments. The thoughts and fear of Jammeh will take center stage of their mental activities.
Gamnians need to stand up and resist this stupidity. They must be willing to die rather than get into that bus and driven to Kololi and allow themselves drenched by ignorant hooligans...
Halifa has made a dicision that all Gambians need to make right now. That is to go to jail rather than sit down and cowardly watch this unprecedented injustice destroy our decent people. The students, the Bar Association, The Supreme Islamic Council, Church Organizations, political organizations, journalists and the general society needs to come out and protest against this evil in our country ...
I am particularly ashamed of the Gambia's Supreme Islamic Council. If they know that they are not the ones to tell the truth, they need to stop visiting the State House, collecting money from Jammeh and praying for his 'long life and prosperity' ...

That essentially is the crux of the matter, we see our selves being mistreated on a routine basis and wait for others to liberate us. The mindset which he is exploiting is the one you have so clearly exposed . This is a very sinister method of enslaving people; because of a strongly belief in these paranormal attributes of human beings , he has grabbed the populace by the forelock and twisting them so wickedly. I am sure this will backfire at him.I also suspect that he is trying to get at his percieved enemies or detractors , which might very well be people we all consider to be his closest allies.I surely will not be surprised to see heads rolling among the high profile members of his security services, should they commence commenting against or reacting even if covertly done.Mark my words.I read that various villages were targetted by the hunters including his home locale , there after other villagers will surely follow and God help any officer who dares to challenge them.
