Men Around The Messenger PBUH
The "Golden" words of Abu Bakr.
Narrated `Aaishah: Abu Bakr came riding his horse from his dwelling place in As-Sunh. He got down from it, entered the Masjid and did not speak with anybody till he came to me and went direct to the Prophet who was covered with a marked blanket. Abu Bakr uncovered his face. He knelt down and kissed him and then started weeping and said, "My father and my mother be sacrificed for you, O Allaah's Prophet! Allaah will not combine two deaths on you. You have died the death which was written for you."
Narrated Abu Salama from Ibn Abbas: Abu Bakr came out and `Umar was addressing the people, and Abu Bakr told him to sit down but `Umar refused. Abu Bakr again told him to sit down but 'Umar again refused. Then Abu Bakr recited the Tashah-hud (i.e. none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah and Muhammad is Allaah's Apostle) and the people attended to Abu Bakr and left 'Umar. Abu Bakr said, "Amma ba'du, whoever amongst you worshipped Muhammad, then Muhammad is dead, but whoever worshipped Allaah, Allaah is alive and will never die. Allaah said: 'Muhammad is no more than an Apostle and indeed (many) Apostles have passed away before him ..(up to the) grateful.' " (3.144) (The narrator added, "By Allaah, it was as if the people never knew that Allaah had revealed this verse before till Abu Bakr recited it and then whoever heard it, started reciting it.") Men Around The Messenger PBUH
An old man with a thick beard and with clothes having over 15 patches was sitting with his head between his hands thinking deeply about a serious matter. He was the man who was known as Ameer-ul-Mu’minin.
Then suddenly, he got up and said, “I found it, I found it, I found it!”
The people said, “What’s wrong O’ Ameer-ul-Mu’minin?”
He was no other than ‘Umar (RA) who was concerned about the city of Hims. The city which was quite often the reason of Fitnah for the Ummah. He had recently released his former governor, Mu’awiyah (RA) and ‘Umar (RA) wanted a man with Zuhd-a man who had divorced the pleasures of the dunya.
Ameer-ul-Mu’minin ‘Umar (RA) came and asked for a man and when he was brought he said to him, “I assign you to become the Governor of the city of Hims.” The man replied, “La Hawla Wala Quwata ILlah Billah! O’ Ameer-ul-Mu’minin, do not test me through this.” ‘Umar (RA) said, “You are putting it on my neck and you want to walk away from it? Wallahi that will not happen!” This man was no other than Sa‘id ibn ‘Aamir (RA) who accepted Islam after the Battle of Khaybar. He had no choice but to obey the Ameer-ul-Mu’minin (RA). ‘Umar (RA) gave Sa‘id (RA), a newlywed man, some money and said, “Listen this is what you need for your travel and this will suffice and you will not look in the wealth of the Ummah.” With sadness and grief, he took what he was given and went back to his house.
When he reached home, his wife, who was waiting for him, asked, “What is the matter of Sa‘id?”
He (RA) told his wife what Ameer-ul-Mu’minin (RA) had given him. She got excited.
Sa‘id (RA) said, “What if I give you a better deal than this?” She said, “What can be better than this?” Sa‘id (RA) said, “We will invest this money” She said, “Invest it? What if we lose it?” Sa‘id (RA) said, “No, the One who is going to invest for us, He will guarantee it!” She said, “He is going to guarantee it?!” Sa‘id (RA) said, “Yes, He is going to guarantee it.”
She agreed. They went, the people of Hims were eager to receive their governor. They knew that he was coming on a certain day so they were waiting for him outside the city.
Every time they saw a traveller, they would ask him, “Where are you from?” And if he replied that he was from the city of Madinah, the people would ask him, “Have you seen the governor? He should be here any minute!” In that process, they stopped one of the people who had this old skinny donkey with a very humble outfit, with a wife who was covered from head to toe. And then they asked him, “Where are you from?” The man said, “I am from Madinah!” They said, “Have you seen the Amir who was sent by ‘Umar ibn al Khattab?” He looked away and then turned to them and said, I am your governor!” They said, “You?!” Sa‘id (RA) said, “The situation is what you see.” They said, “No!” They were shocked. And in his daily life, they saw that this man was serving them, and working for them left and right nothing of his desire. They would say to him, “Make sure you are kind to your family and your wife!” Sa‘id (RA) would reply, “No, my aim is clear.”
People loved him so much so, much so that ‘Umar (RA) sent a letter to Sa‘id (RA) asking him why the people loved him so much. He (RA) replied, “O’ Ameer-ul-Mu’minin, I am one of them and I am a simple man. I clean the Masjid with them and I serve them on their streets.” ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) was never satisfied with the reports. He wanted to see for himself what exactly was happening. He then gathered the people and said, “O’ people of Hims, do you have any problem with your governor here?” The people looked around at each other in amazement. They then said, “O’ Ameer-ul-Mu’minin, we have 4 problems with this young man.” ‘Umar (RA) was making this du‘a within himself, “O’ Allah do not disappoint me in this man. I only know that he is the best of your servants.” He (RA) then said, “What are they?” They said, “Firstly, he would not come out of his house until sun rises. Secondly, he would not respond after the sunset. Thirdly, he takes two days off every month. Fourthly, he periodically faints and we know that he has no control over this but we would like to know the reason of this.”
‘Umar bin al-Khattab (RA) said to Sa‘id (RA), “Respond to the accusations.” Sa‘id (RA) said, “O’ Ameer-ul-Mu’minin, you don’t need to know this since it is between me and Allah.” ‘Umar (RA) said, “No, how could I?” Sa‘id (RA) said, “O’ Ameer-ul-Mu’minin, as for the first one, I have no servant and my wife is sick. I have to make the dough and I wait until I feed everyone in my household and then I come out to them.” ‘Umar (RA) said, “Allahu Akbar! What about the second one?” Then Sa‘id (RA) continued, “O’ Ameer-ul-Mu’minin, the day is theirs and the night is for my Lord. In the day, I serve them but at night I pray to my Lord!” ‘Umar (RA) again said, “Allahu Akbar! What about the third one?” Sa‘id (RA) then said, “O’ Ameer-ul-Mu’minin , I only have one thawb, so I wash it twice a month.” ‘Umar (RA) then said, “Allahu Akbar! What about the fourth one?” Sa‘id (RA) then said, “O’ Ameer-ul-Mu’minin, I witnessed when Quraysh killed Khubaib bin ‘Adi (RA). And when they were killing him, they said, ‘O’ Khubaib, would you rather be with your family, safe and Muhammad (Salalahu Alayhi wa Salaam) in your place?’ Khubaib (RA) replied, ‘No, I’d rather be here than Muhammad (SAW) be pricked by a thorn!’ And this was after he had performed Salah, and he looked at us and made a powerful du‘a against Quraysh. Whenever I think of this, I think that Allah (SWT) would never forgive my sins and He will hold me on the day of Judgement and I can’t imagine this so that’s why I faint O’ Ameer-ul-Mu’minin”
‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) ‘s beard was wet with tears and he said, “All praise be to Allah who did not disappoint me in this man!”

Men Around The Messenger PBUH
Narrated Mu'adh ibn Jabal I said to Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him): Inform me about an act which would entitle me to get into Paradise, and remove me away from Hell-Fire. He (the Prophet) said: You have asked me about a matter (which ostensibly appears to be) difficult but it is easy to those for whom Allah, the Exalted, has made it easy. Worship Allah and do not associate anything with him, establish prayer, pay the Zakat, observe the fast of Ramadan and perform Hajj to the (sacred) House (Ka'bah). He again said: Should I not direct you to the gateways of good? ..
Listen to me: The fasting is a shield against evil, the charity extinguishes (the fire of sin) just as water extinguishes fire, the prayer of a person during the middle of the night. Then he recited: 'Who forsake their beds...(up to)....they used to do.' Then he said: Should I not direct you to the highest level of this matter, to the pillar on which (it rests) and its top? I said: Allah's Messenger yes, (do tell me). He said: The uppermost level of the matter is Islam. Its pillar is the prayer and its top is Jihad. He then said: Should I not inform you of the sheet anchor of all this? I said: Allah's Apostle (of course do it). He took hold of his tongue and said: Exercise restraint on it. I said: Apostle of Allah, would we be held responsible for what we say with it? Thereupon he said: Mu'adh, may your mother be bereaved. Will anything else besides (irresponsible) talk cause the people to be thrown into the Hell-Fire upon their faces or on their nostrils?

"I have not seen a person more similar to the Prophet's appearance, conduct, guidance, and speech, whether sitting or standing, than Fatima. When she enters, the Messenger of Allah stands up, kisses and welcomes her, then takes her hand and asks her to sit in his place." (Tirmidhi) Masha'Allah may Allah grant us all daughters like Fatima (RA). |

Men Around The Messenger PBUH
One of the better known companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was Abdullah ibn Masood, who was a teenager working as a shepherd when he met the Prophet for the first time. The Prophet admired his honesty as Abdullah refused to give him milk because the sheep in his custody were part of his trust. Before the meeting was over, Abdullah became a Muslim. He grew up to be one of the best learned companions of the Prophet, reporting more than a thousand Hadiths. However, he remained poor for most of his life.
He married Zainab bint Abu Mu’awiyah, a woman from the Thaqeef tribe. She was a good wife, skilled in handiwork and eager to learn. She used to make things with her hands and sell them to earn some money which she used to help her relatives who were poor. Her husband was exemplary in his attitude of dignity. He encouraged her to seek knowledge and to acquire greater insight into Islam, putting what she learns into practice.
Zainab heard the Prophet addressing women, telling them to donate to charity, even if they have to sell their jewelry for that. She came back home and said to her husband: “You are a man of limited means, and the Prophet has told us to donate to charity. Go to him and ask whether I can pay my donation to you. Otherwise, I will have to pay it to some other people.” Her husband said: “You better go and ask him.”
Zainab reports: “I went to see him and at his door I found an Ansari woman who had come to ask the same question. We were rather apprehensive of going in. Bilal, however, came over. So we said to him: ‘Go to the Prophet and tell him that two women are at the door who would like to know whether they can pay their zakat to their husbands and to orphan children they are bringing up. Do not tell him who we are.’ Bilal went in and put the question to the Prophet. The Prophet asked him who the two women were. Bilal said: ‘A woman from the Ansar and Zainab’. The Prophet said: ‘Which Zainab?’ He answered: ‘Abdullah’s wife’. The Prophet said: ‘They will have double reward: One for their kindness to relatives and one for zakat.’” (Related by Al-Bukhari).
The Prophet sets a principle in this Hadith which makes relatives more entitled to charity than others. There is, however, a main condition that applies here, which is that the relative who benefits by our zakat is not one whom we are required to support. This means that a person cannot pay his zakat to his parents, grandparents, children or grandchildren because he is duty bound to support them if they are poor. Nor can a man pay his zakat to his wife, but she may pay her zakat to her husband. This is because in Islam a husband is required to support his wife, while she has no similar duty. Both have full independence and complete authority over their separate properties.
We note how Abdullah ibn Masood wanted his wife to go and ask the Prophet herself, because he realized that she would be free to ask about any details she wanted to know. Moreover, whatever she would learn from the Prophet would be better ingrained in her mind. Such encouragement enabled Zainab to learn more and become more reliable. She reported eight Hadiths she heard from the Prophet. It was her reliable knowledge that motivated her husband, who was one of the most learned companions of the Prophet, to acknowledge her role after his death. He wrote in his will: “My executors are Al-Zubair ibn Al-Awwam and his son Abdullah ibn Al-Zubair. They have full authority to determine whatever is to be done with whatever I leave behind. They have a free hand in all this. No daughter of mine may be married without their knowledge. Nothing of all this shall be withheld from my wife Zainab.” |

Men Around The Messenger PBUH
After Ali (radiyalahu anhu) died, Muawiyah (radiyalahu anhu) said to Dirar bin Damrah,
“Describe Ali to me.” “Will you not excuse me from answering you,” said Dirar “No, describe him,” insisted Muawiyah (radiyalahu anhu)
“Please, excuse me from doing so,” said Dirar “I will not,” said Muawiyah (radiyalahu anhu)
“I will do so, then,” said Dirar with a sigh.
“By Allah, he was (far-sighted) and very strong. He spoke with a truthful finality, so that, through him, truth became distinguished from falsehood. He ruled justly, and knowledge gushed forth from him, as did wisdom. He felt an aversion to the world and its (pleasures).
He was comfortable with the night and its darkness (for he would stand up then and perform voluntary prayers). By Allah, he would cry profusely (from fear of Allah); long durations would he spend in contemplation, during which time he would converse with his soul.
He showed a liking (for religious reasons, of course; to train his soul to be patient and abstemious) to coarse garments and lower-quality food. By Allah, it was as if – in his humbleness – he was one of us; when we asked him a question, he would answer us; when we would go to him, he would initiate (the greeting of peace); and when we would invite him (to our homes), he would come to us.
Yet, in spite of his closeness to us, we would not speak (freely) with him, because of the dignity and honor that he exuded if he smiled, he revealed the likes of straight and regular pearls (i.e. his teeth)
. He honored religious people and loved the poor. The strong person could not hope to gain favors from him through falsehood. And the weak person never lost hope of his justness. I swear, by Allah, that on certain occasions,
I saw him in his place of prayer when the night was dark and few stars could be seen; he would be holding his beard and crying the way a very sad person cries; and I would hear him saying,
‘O world, O World, are you offering yourself to me? Do you desire me? O Never! Never! Deceive someone other than me. I have divorced you for the third time, so that you cannot return to me.
Your life is short, the existence you offer is base, and your danger is great. Alas for the paucity of sustenance (good deeds), the great distance of the journey, and the loneliness of the road”’
Upon hearing this description, Muawiyyah (radiyalahu anhu) eyes swelled with tears, and not being able to hold them from gushing forth, he was forced to wipe them with his cuffs; and the same can be said for those who were present. Muawiyah (radiyalahu anhu) then said, “May Allah have mercy on the father of Al-Hassan, for he was, by Allah, just as you described him to be.” He (radiyalahu anhu) said, ‘O Dirar, describe your sadness on having lost him.”
“My sadness,” began Dirar, “is like the sadness of a woman who cannot control her tears or allay her grief after her child, while in her lap, has just been slaughtered.” Dirar then stood up and left. |

Wish for Everybody in Prayer
A bedouin entered the masjid of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) and offered his prayers and then said: ‘O Allah! Grant Your favour to me and to Muhammad (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), and to none else besides us.’ On hearing this, the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) observed: ‘You have narrowed the vast limits of Allah’s blessings. [Bukhari]
Avoid prejudice and selfishness in prayer. Do not fall into the error of considering the vast blessings with Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) as limited and thus praying for the granting of His bounty to you alone. Ask for others what you would like others to ask for you.

Men Around The Messenger PBUH
BE PATIENT WITH THOSE WHOM U LOVE
“‘Umar-may Allah be pleased with him-was known for his strong personality. One day, a man quarelled with his wife and came to ‘Umar to ask for his advice on how to cope. When he stood at ‘Umar’s door and was about to knock, he heard ‘Umar’s own wife shouting at him whilst he remained silent. Known for his short temper and ability to argue well, it was surprising to...... hear that he did not shout back.
The man was amazed, and turned back to leave. ‘Umar heard a noise at the door, so he went out and called out to the man, “What do you need?”
He said, “O Amir Al-Mu’minin, I came to you to complain about my wife, but then I heard your own shouting at you!”
‘Umar said, “She is my wife who sleeps with me, makes me food and washes my clothes. Shall I not be patient with her?” |

Men Around The Messenger PBUH
Abu Bakr ('The Owner of Camels') was not his real name. He acquired this name later in life because of his great interest in raising camels. His real name was Abdul Ka'aba ('Slave of Ka'aba'), which Muhammad (peace be on him) later changed to Abdullah ('Slave of God'). The Prophet also gave him the title of 'Siddiq' - 'The Testifier to the Truth.'
Abu Bakr was a fairly wealthy merchant, and before he embraced Islam, was a respected citizen of Mecca. He was three years younger than Muhammad (peace be on him) and some natural affinity drew them together from earliest child hood. He remained the closest Companion of the Prophet all through the Prophet's life. When Muhammad first invited his closest friends and relatives to Islam, Abu Bakr was among the earliest to accept it. He also persuaded Uthman and Bilal to accept Islam. In the early days of the Prophet's mission, when the handful of Muslims were subjected to relentless persecution and torture, Abu Bakr bore his full share of hardship. Finally when God's permission came to emigrate from Mecca, he was the one chosen by the Prophet to accompany him on the dangerous journey to Medina. In the numerous battles which took place during the life of the Prophet, Abu Bakr was always by his side. Once, he brought all his belongings to the Prophet, who was raising money for the defense of Medina. The Prophet asked "Abu Bakr, what did you leave for your family?" The reply came: "God and His Prophet."
Even before Islam, Abu Bakr was known to be a man of upright character and amiable and compassionate nature. All through his life he was sensitive to human suffering and kind to the poor and helpless. Even though he was wealthy, he lived very simply and spent his money for charity, for freeing slaves and for the cause of Islam. He often spent part of the night in supplication and prayer. He shared with his family a cheerful and affectionate home life. |

Men Around The Messenger PBUH "BY ALLAH I LOVE U"
Mu'adh (Radi-Allahu 'anhu) reported: The Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) took hold of my hand and said: "O Mu'adh! By Allah I love you, so I advise you to never forget to recite after every prayer:
Allahumma a'inni alaa dhikrika, wa shukrika, wa husni 'ibaadatika
(O Allah, help me remember You, to be grateful to You, and to worship You in an excellent manner)."

Men Around The Messenger PBUH
Umm Al-Mu’mineen Aisha radi Allahu anha once met a poor woman who was with her two daughters. Aisha radi Allahu anha gave her three dates. The woman gave each of the daughters one date and took one for herself. She was about to eat the date when one of her daughters expressed the desire to eat her date. She immediately shared the date among her daughters. This kind treatment impressed Aisha radi Allahu anha, and she related the whole incident to RasulAllah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam. After listening to the whole story, RasulAllah sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam said, "Verily, Allah has assured Paradise for her because of this act or has rescued her from the fire of Hell." |
