Prankish Monkeys

The monkeys across the river
Oh naughty things
Who climb trees
By the leaves
Know they not that
Breaks monkeys necks
Caution thrown to the wind
These naughty monkeys
Keep up their pranks
Waiting for peril in play
When it comes visiting
All you hear is shreaks of mysery
But come tomorrow
They shall go on again
Playing as if nothing happened

Kaaniba, thanks for sharing your poems with us. Perhaps it is time we have a poetry forum where we should move all poems posted here at Bantaba.

That would be great and I can foresee many others sending their contributions to that forum. Thanks for your kind words and also for being the main sail of this bantaba. It is a wondeful forum and you must have been inspired to bring it into being. Inimbara baake. Reminding me of a beggar who always tells people who offer him alms or charity 'Fangna bara', or sings a sarcastic song repeatedly as follows:-

Foo faa foo fayang
Ntekoleh foo faa foo

He accompanies this with a funny dance which makes lookers enjoy his pranks offering him more gifts. This man apparently collected so much money and when he felt he had enough he decided to travel back to his home village. Unfortunately for him he slept that night in the streets and a rascal who saw him sleeping grabbed the bundle on which he laid his head, this bundle contained thousands of dalasi and CFA currency notes ;the fruits of his begging exercise. The lucky rascal made away with his loot and when the man woke up in the morning , the bundle was nowhere to be found. He was thought to be a mad man before this event by many who saw him , but he was actually very sane. The turn of events however led to his total decline to insanity and he never regained his sanity till his death. The moral of this short story though is open to discussion, I leave it to the floor.

Bro Kani;

Go Forth & Conquer!

Your literary hand, together with the many others here deserves the bigggest kudos. I humbly join Momodou on his proposal/observation of a 'literature' column...for prose/poetry. I think that the column will be most lively than all other columns, because I can see less arguements there....with emotional bashings all the time.

Regards,
D...

Poetry is always for interpretation; others simple and others complex. This is usually the case with tips, just like historical monuments, events...places, persons, certain words associated with certain events. For example, "Soweto" is likely to talk about the killings during apartheid in South Africa. Sept 11th is likely to talk about the world trade center; Kathikally is likely to talk about devine intervention by the white crocodiles in Bakau's pool; Muhammad (Saw) is likely to talk about Pure Islam....so forth and so forth. It is not only one interpretation. It is like a photograph. Others can see beauty and others can see ugliness. Some poems are boring, and others are moving. There are times when you "shock" in them, and there are times when you do good.

This is the activism of the old, and survived over centuries. The story goes that whenever verses were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the disbelievers used to accuse him of being a poet, and I believe this is because of the nature of the Quran, so unique....to date. Like Dr. Larry Pinkney of the former Black panthers movement once told me, that words are tools for usage.

Among Gambians, I realized great many poets; like Peters, I. Jagne, and the many others whose work didn't succeed publication. To those that take fun in it, here is a clear chance to improve ourselves while interacting. To others that believe it is hard, here is a chance to hitch and learn, just like Friedrich Nietzsche uttered:
quote:
"He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one can not fly into flying."

Already, the poetry column was way over due. It might be the most lively column we can have here. On that note, I once again thank our moderators for the decision of a poetry column.

Dear Moderators
we once again are blessed with it
a poetry column
that came to revive literature
to bash with short and long lines
with beatiful melody tones
day-in and night-out.

Dear Readers
with the seren sounds of trains
and the Moos of the calves
there is great hope that
poetry is a fruitful plant
and we shall all reap its fruits
while hitching and mumbling on lines.

Dear poetry bashers
bash with fine lines
bash to unite the people
and bash to scare the devil within midst
for the devil is none
but that outcast enemy
So blessed be the poetry forum!
