Its alive and well, sadly when I went home to Morocco - I was absolutely disgusted to discover a 15 year old child being living in what amounted to servitude. To my horror she was working from 6am to midnight - and her own family were the beneficiary of £10 per month being paid directly to the child's father.
When I demanded that she be returned to her family, I received a barrage of abuse and even cursed in Allah's name. This is despite the fact that this is outlawed in Morocco, the father traveled up from his home some 500 miles away to argue with me, added to that I was informed he had another daughter in similar circumstances. When I said his daughter should be in school, he remarks spoke volumes of this despicable and disgusting trade in human misery "I don't want my daughter to have an education", I think that sums up the whole story.

Abuse of child labor is not uncommon around the world. Why do you think the United Nations enacted the Charter on the Rights of Children?
I like capitalism but its excesses if unchecked, lead to abuse of the weak. Serfdom will prevail in any society where inequalities exist and where leaders are not subject to scrutiny. Even in the west, tales of ridiculous low wages to immigrants still exist and your scenario of working long hours still exists. If you were an "undocumented immigrant" that is not anything strange. Long work hours and ridiculous wages form part of the job description.
