It is still as widespread In 2007 a is a Zambian journalist reported on the child rape epidemic in Zambia her research found as many as one child a week was raped and that in most cases, the child was infected with a sexually transmitted disease, an indication that the culprit did what he did with a purpose of getting cured. She also uncovered that child rape cases were being heard in courts at an increasing rate as 3-4 per session opposed to recent years whereby these cases came to light every 3-4 months.
The scary thing is that despite your original link in 2001 this has spread at an alarming rate to other states. You asked what can be done I think Education and awareness have to be the key.
Even here in Europe in the 19 century men believed the'cure' for syphilis was by having sex with a child. In Liverpool there were special brothels to provide this cure. |

What I think is shocking is that many people do not even seem to care much about this, why arenīt people doing anything? Why this big silence? Why arenīt people pushing their governments to punishing these rapists harder? Or are people really unaware of what is happening although it happens nearly everyday right infront of them?
And the western media is also so lame about this, total silence. Also since itīs happening in Africa westerners tend to shut off when hearing this kind of stories, it is just too cruel and too much to deal with.
Right this minute there may be a child being raped and left to die somewhere in Africa and nothing is being done about it. This is not humane, you do not even treat dogs this cruel. |

The answer lies in education, which is never a quick fix.
The superstition thay sex with a virgin pure child can cure HIV etc needs to be laid to rest. Education in schools and a public information programme is what is needed.
The responsibility lies with individual African governments to put this in place. Also in the individual countries the religious leaders should be preaching against such terrible practises.
This also leads back to the fundamental rights of children to be listened to and to have a voice. Children should be respected and they should have rights.
If children are devalued and not respected these things are more likely to happen.
In an ideal world every child would be a wanted child who would grow up loved and cared for and protected from such terrible acts. |

I agree, you also made a good point about religious leaders preaching against these acts since people do tend to listen to them. |

Although this is a couple of years old this makes interesting reading the writer makes a valid point about the religion and its association with virginity with purity. Sexual disease carries shame and stigma. Virginity or sexual abstinence on the other hand carries the illusion of purity. Cleanliness. This sense of purity has been emphasized by religion in particular, certain religions talk about women being unclean while pregnant, or when they menstruate, or for a period after the birth of a child. Many religions see vaginal fluids as unclean. Virginity is associated with purity and in many societies from Sri Lanka to Swaziland to Kwa Zulu Natal women are not only expected to remain virgins until marriage, but may be forced to undergo rites to test their virginity. http://www.speakout.org.za/about/child/child_virgin_rape_myth.html |

Very disturbing reading. I donīt know how it is possible for people to be this ignorant? Are they not able to think on their own at all? How can they put themselves before anything else and torture a child for their own sake? Words can not describe how I loathe these kind of "people". They are worse than animals! |
