It would be more realistic to say the monthly salary may reach 1600D.
I thought you might like to read this very interesting report, (financing education, terms & conditions within) once again it was put onto bantaba by Momodou:

Thank you no wonder they have problems retaining teachers and I thought 1600D a week was bad
Puts it in perspective when some people are paying 16220D for 1 childs school fees

I THINK I am right in saying that most people WORKING in Gambia (and that is small amount) earn around £20 a month on average. This is barely enough for rice for the month for the family.
Gambians in villages exist on exchange and bartar of favours and goods aswell as the money economy. Clearly there is not enough money in the average village family to provide all that is needed.
The community pulling together enables people to achieve more than the mere wage would.
The retaining of teachers is more complex than the wages. They are often uprooted with no say in the matter. Sent to villages they dont know, miles away from their families. the accommodation can be very poor and they have little privacy and are always on call for the village.
Perhaps if teachers were allowed to apply for jobs of their choice in places they want to live, that would be a big help. Alot of teachers would like to work in their home village helping their own people.
Also wages do need to be improved, especially in days of food prices being inflated. |

Bev, don't think you will get a bag of rice for £20 in the Banjul/Serrekunda area anymore. Possibly up country it can still be found at 750D. Have a good weekend. sab. |

Im really confused over these pay structures
I take it its just basic state schools and schools that rely on charity can pay they staff wages that they see fit.
The reason I question this is because I know of a teacher in pre school (which is a state school but is supported by various people donating equipment etc) who drives a car (not a new one) but can afford to run it nevertheless he lives alone in his compound in the town which is by no means luxurious but has a TV and DVD player and is adequately furnished. How an earth can he do it on less than £40 a month?

Teachers salary range frm Grade 3 to Grade 10 depending on the school. Schools are categorised from Grade A( lowest in terms of numbers) to Grade E. Garde E schools are like Serrekunda Pariamry, Latrikunda, etc
Grade 3 is a Basic Techer's Certifivcate Holder (BTC). These are the lowest on the "Qualified Teachers" structure and attract just a little above D500.00 a month. Below them are the unqualified Teachers on Grade 2 just around D450.00 depending also on the region they are teaching. Regions one and two Teachers are not paid a Provincial Allowance which stands at 21% of basic salary.
One can be a Headmaster in a Class A school but then become a A Senior Master in a Class B school. Class E schools are paid on Grade 10 on the Integrated Pay Scale. A Garde 8 Teacher or any Grade any civil service position attracts D34,392.00 per annum as of today.
Its important to know that inaccordance with the Scheme of Servivce, direct entry to Grade 8 in the Civil Service is possible only with a Master's Degree. Bachelors Degree holders start at Cadet Levels on Grade 7. However, a Bachelors degree with three years work experience, and after successful confirmation in the service by the Publis Service Commission will eanr a promotion to grade 8.
This should give you an idea of the pay structure. Grade 9 earns D40,692.00 per annum. Grade 4 earns D11904.00 per annum. Grade 7 earns D23, 700.00 per annum whilst grade 6 earns D19, 080.00 per annum

Thank you Kondorong ,this seems to make more sense. So would a school in Brikama be a grade E? Would I be right in assuming someone with a Masters in a school in Serrekunda would earn a good(better) salary? |

Yes Brikama Primary is a Class E school but not all Primary schools in Brikama are Class E. Its based on student enrolment which goes with increased responsibility.
Teachers range from Gade 2 to 10. Grade E schools Headmasters are on the same salary as the Regional Eduaction Officers. There are five regions. |
