Raleigh's annual Gamo is this weekend. Personally, I wish them well. These endeavors are very good. They deserve maximum exposure as well because God come first in everything. The sentiments echoed by Imam jeng are very powerful. Unity is a powerful message.

Good luck to Raleigh and May Allah SWT give us all the blessings of the Islamic gathering -to be guided by good manners and ethics conforming to true Islam as instructed by God, Almighty.

*Gamo: This is an Islamic gathering for short. It involves sermons glorifying God Almighty and His clear Books(message.) It is not a place to seek any other mercy other than that of God.

Regards,
Dalton

NEWS

DEPUTY IMAM PA EBOU JENG CALLS
FOR UNITY: By Yero Jallow..............August 13th, 2008
Pa Ebou Jeng, deputy Imam of Raleigh called on Gambians to do
away all differences and unite for the sake of Allah in the forth coming
Islamic gathering locally called 'GAMO'. This annual gathering aslo
known as "Mawludnabi" scheduled for August 15th and 16th 2008
in Raleigh, North Carolina.

"It is time to put away all our differences and come together as
one for the sake of Allah." Imam Jeng noted.

According to the deputy Imam, on Friday August 15th 2008, there
will be a Quranic recitation and an Islamic ritual called "Wassifaa,"
which is a special way of supplication to God. This will be followed
by a sermon from Oustas Yusupha Jahateh, a visiting scholar from
The Gambia currently in Raleigh to grace the occasion.

The second day events Saturday August 16th, 2008 according to Imam Jeng Jeng, will start with
"Burdah," a special prayer on the Holy prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This will be followed by a
powerful sermon from the main guest speaker, Imam Muntaha Faye of Banjul. This scholar and
Imam is a former student ( 'talibeh') of the late renowned Sheik-ul Islam Imam Bai Nyass (May
God accept his struggle) whose teaching of Islam goes beyond the boundaries of the West African
region.

To this end, the deputy Imam thanked God almighty and all those who are helping in making the
gathering a success.

Other residents of North Carolina informed this reporter that a lot of Muslims from all over the United
States will grace the occasion this year with a spirit to glorify God and His religion Islam.

Gainako will give full coverage to the 'Gamo' with live pictures.

i don't know when will brothers stop celebrating an event date they are not sure about. the exact day of the prohpet's birth is not known for certain. it is only the approstimate day that people celebrate. there is no problem people undertaking Gamos but associating with a birth day is sad indeed. an innovation of the highest order.

Surah- Ar-Rum 30-22

For the longest, I too shared some frustration about Gamos, and I hope I was wrong. Mine has nothing to do with the timing, but the way I have seen some of the gatherings conducted in the past -The Gambia, NOT NECESSARILY THE GAMO UNDER THE MICROSCOPE. Personally, I do not subcribe to any sect of Islam. You will be excused if you call me a 'sunnih.' The reduction of strong Islamic Sheiks like Amadou Bamba Ba, Ebrima Bai Nyass, Omar Futtih (May God accept their struggles) to some worshipping names disturbs me a lot. Notably in Touba, a whole sect was born. (Matter of Ebra Faal.)

But if Gamos are organized the way they are spposed to, obviously in my view, it is just an islamic gathering for seeking Allah's mercy and true guidance; spreading islamic knowledge; unifying the Islamic ummah; glorifying only God; inviting non-muslims to Islam, et cetera...

thanks Uncle Suntou & bro Mansa.

Thanks brother D. It is good ways to express our love to this great man (PBUH)but when it comes to his birthday i will get little bit confused.
Celebrating the Prophet's birthday is bidia ,an innovation in the religion. the Prophet (saaws) did not instruct others to do it, and he didn't have companions around him doing it and then give any type of permission including silent permission.
We are not to make distinction between any of the Prophets. Distinction in status, for instance. Like to say one is better than another. This leads to idol worship, similar to what the christians did when they began to worship Jesus instead of treat him as the Prophet he was. They just took it a step too far.. and kept running with it, up to what it is today.

The Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam has said: Do not over praise me as the Christians over-praised the son of Mary. I am His slave so say: 'Allah's slave and messenger' [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

What is important about each Prophet or Messenger is the MESSAGE.
So let express that.

Bro Mbay,

The quote above is beautiful and typical of what a holy prophet will utter. I greatly share all your sentiments here. I only reserve opinion on the 'Gamo' once done in an ethical way according to the teachings of islam as ordained by Allah Azja wa jalla. From the first posting on this topic, you can tell I exercised caution to avoid annoying others who believe in it because unification of the ummah is very important. Some of these little differences (I am sure many of them) will continue to surface among our midst, unfortunately. If 'Gamo' means Islamic gathering like I and the many others are made to understand, it is as well a stance of tolerance that must be exercised by the many others that don't believe in it. From talking to the deputy imam (Pa Ebou), I sensed a 'Tizania' idea once he mentioned 'Wassifa' and 'Burda.' Attribution of 'Gamo' to the birth of the prophet though sounds scary to me. I stand to be educated on this because of the little I know, because as you mentioned neither the prophet nor his deciples celebrated his birthday. But also with emphasis the 'news' in the story by Gainako is just the news, factual to its base. It neither should show our endorsement nor our lacking in tolerance. Matter of fact, it gave us the opportunity to discuss this matter here to establish some truth about the whole situation.

For the records: I Believe in God, His prophets and messengers, His Books and the day of Akirah. I don't belong to any sect of Islam. I only consider my self a "sunni" if you like with great caution of utterance, meaning following the Quran and the Sunnah of Muhammad (PBUH) as best as I can.

I hope those that belong to sects and know the importance of 'maludnabi' celebration will help us here, to stir more this intellectual debate with a spirit for enlightenment. If as alleged that some of it is 'bidah', how come it got the endorsement of great many scholars? Notably, last year, the occassion was graced by the Imam ratib of Banjul, Alj. Cherno Kah. If you have an answer, please share it with us.

BO.Allah knows the best about the this questions and the other,
Thats why i will said am afraid but i can’t answer these questions properly.
I would even go further and says I real don’t know much about occasion of the Goumo (which i visit twice )and I was highly impressed, my researching had never intensified in that area. In that reason i dont mind if am to apologise.
But my problems still remain the same about,in which Hadith has brought this forward from our beloved Prophet(pbuh) or Khalifas,(raa).?
We have to be some time caution.
Maybe the reason that these highly-respect seeing persons went there, to express the feeling to the Allah (sw), Islam, to the Prophet(pbuh) or the other reason ?, Allah knows. Since Islam religion is sincerity to Allah (subhan wataala) the book, his messenger, Muslim leaders as well their common folk?
Only they and Allah knows it.
