It is news just in.

It looks like he (Lt. Admiral ) escaped jail in Guinea and headed to the Gambia for safety.

He should be extradited forthwith and put to trial.

Rumblings again in Guinea Bissau, its a fantastic country but without any structure at all,if the president goes what stability there is now will shatter with tragic consequences for the country and its people as recent history shows.

Bro Mansa,

There should be rules guiding it because it is not right to extradite a person to where he will be harmed, knowing the kind of kangaroo justices that can be rendered in some countries. Also, he is innocent till proven guilty.

The other note here jammeh have a vest interest in Guinea. The irony is how can a devil (coup maker) submit to justice another alleged devil (a coup plotter)...c'aam!!

thanks,
Dalton

GUINEA BISSAU FOILED COUP LEADER UNDER ARREST IN GAMBIA
Reports reaching this reporter spoke of the arrest of the Guinea Bissau foiled coup leader, Lieutenant
Colonel Arsenio Balde or Rear Admiral Jose Americo Bubo Na Tchuto in the Gambia on Tuesday
12th August 2008.

The BBC reported the arrest first at about 5pm followed by Radio Gambia which said the UN
systems and Embassies are duely informed of the arrest.

If these reports are anything to go by then the coup leader must have escaped from custody in Guinea
Bissau. He was said to have been arrested with some of his colleagues who came with him.

It remains to be seen why the coup leader chooses the Gambia but one could deduce that since
president Jammeh is always glorifying coup detat during his celebrations, failed coup leaders could
interpret that to mean that he would protect those who have chosen coups detat as a means to come
to power. One has to wait and see what the Gambian leader's reaction will be..

I agree Dalton. On the flip side, this is a great opportunity to show the rest of the world that coups should not be condoned in Africa any more. Just last week, the military did it in Mauritania an now another attempt in Bissau. It also could also have a potentially distabilizing effect on Gambia if our neighbors, in this Guinea Bissau sees Gambia as habouring coupists. We already have that problem with Senegal accusing us of hiding casamance rebels.

hey friend/Toubab,

You didn't miss the headlines on your favorite paper at the DO, just weeks ago -did you? That was when jammeh was calling on Guinea as a true friend infront of the public curtains.

Behind the curtains, we know Kukoi Samba Sanyang is/was believed to be in that neighbor hood. If it is true, jammeh will wish for a mutual deal where his alleged enemies in there will be extradited to the Gambia. It was something similar with Senegal when wade refused to extradite Gambian dessidents there. The noise was all about that and nothing else.

Gamiban should ask for him to be extraditad asap, because if he takes up resident in Gambia, watch the rubbish that follows him. If Gambia is friends with Guinea Bissau, it should not harbur its enemies, WATCH THE BORDERS.

My mistake I thought that you meant that H.E. had some very big enterprise in G-B.

Guinea-Bissau 'coup plotter' held

Tchute was arrested after allegedly trying to overthrow Guinea-Bissau's government [AFP]

Gambian police have captured the head of Guinea-Bissau's navy, who had escaped house arrest and had fled his country by boat after he was accused of trying to stage a coup.

Maria da Conceicao Nobre Cabral, Guinea-Bissau's foreign minister, flew to Gambia on Thursday, following the capture of Rear Admiral Jose Americo Bubo Na Tchute.

The AFP news agency quoted diplomatic sources in Banjul, the Gambian capital, as saying her talks with Isatou Njie-Saidy, the Gambian vice-president, were likely to focus on Tchute's possible extradition.

The minister herself refused to comment.

Tchute was arrested by Guinea-Bissau authorities on Friday after he allegedly tried to overthrow the government, but he escaped and fled to nearby Gambia.

The naval chief arrived in Gambia by sea on Monday, according to Gambian authorities, and was arrested a day later.

Tchute denies any involvement in the alleged coup attempt.

Political crisis

Guinea-Bissau is caught up in a political crisis which has seen its parliament and government dissolved in the past week, with the attempted coup adding to instability ahead of parliamentary elections due in November.

The country has endured a series of political crises, punctuated by coups and war, since independence in 1974.

Analysts fear recent political uncertainty, coupled with a tide of drugs smuggled through the country, is undermining efforts to restore stability after decades of chaos.

"Everything points to the fact that the failed coup was linked to drugs trafficking," Joao Bernardo Vieira, a spokesman for Guinea-Bissau's president, told Radio France International earlier this week.

UN drugs experts say the country has become a hub for international cocaine smugglers taking advantage of poor security and, analysts say, the complicity of local officials to smuggle drugs to Europe.
