How long is a piece of string

Just got a letter yesterday. It took over a month to get from there to here!!

As far as I know mail comes in and goes out on any available plane(so obiously more often in season).

However, how long it takes to arrive seems to depend on several other factors:

Is the mail on a plane to the correct country (I've had outgoing mail end up in Zambia! before it, eventually, got to The Gambia).

Has the person at the Post Office actually put the mail in the delivery bag. There was a huge hoo ha last Tobaski/Christmas when it was found that incomming mail (including a letter to a policeman and another to a post woman ) was not being delivered. It has also been known for the stamps on my incoming mail to mysteriouly dissappear.

And as for mail from The Gambia to UK:

Can this people at the Post Office actually be bothered to load the mail into mail vans and send it to the airport Today Tomorrow

Can the loaders at the airport be bothered to load it onto the plane This week/month/YEAR

Now why did you go and get me started

Well Snuggles I hope your mail isn't desperately urgent and that the recipient is patient (most Gambian's have learned to be).

Oh and a tip - always register it.

Good Luck!

Post from Gambia to here nearly always arrives ok within 2 weeks if it is posted at the coast.

Post from here to Gambia well??????
Some arrives in a week, or 2 or a month or NEVER at all.

It seems that the internal post of Gambia (once you get out of Kombos) is very hit and miss. Understandable in a poor country.

Kolior village actually has an out post of people from the village who live in the Kombos and they deal with most of the villages communication with UK! A committee at the coast. I thought this was a brilliant idea. They use the internet and have advantage of reasonably reliable electricity and postal service.

Leokat you say" Oh and a tip - always register it." as far as I am aware Royal Mail does not offer what used to be known as "Registered mail" which was super people took care of such mail, if you are talking about "International signed for" it is my understanding that mail is only tracked up until the moment it goes on the plane in the UK after that, refer to your own very good posting. The International signed for service does give the impression that your mail is safe and signed for by officials and recipients abroad ,I don't think that is the case, perhaps a Royal mail expert can confirm what I have said is accurate.Looking at Royal Mail's website dos'nt make things that clear.
