Two years is a very light sentence, people like this should serve the better part of their lives behind bars, paying the communities they hurt.
This is definitely NOT a deterrent to future free-riders. |

Nigeria is the Internet Scam centre of the world. If you do a search on scams or 409 scams and there hundreds and hundreds of them you will see most come from Nigeria |

Yes I know. There are some very good Nigerians. I have been lucky to have some very good friends who are Nigerians in the past and presently. When I was living in the Gambia, a lot of my immediate circle of friends were Nigerians and Sierra Leonians. This is a long story, but I will make it short. I once lost a couple of thousands of Dalasis in the Gambia, it was later found by a Nigerian friend of mine and he returned it back to me. A Nigerian? Strange but yes it is true. A good Nigerian (my wife was never so convinced though). Yes there are good Nigerians out there. But over the years, there are so many bad and crooked Nigerians involved in all kinds of fraud and other crimes including '419' scams that the general image of the typical Nigerian is tainted. Partly because of the population and the economic condition in Nigeria, Nigerians have evolved into a tough and hardy breed. My Nigerian friends told me that the typical armed robber in Lagos or elsewhere in Nigeria is invariably a university graduate... Snuggels' view of Nigerains is sadly the view in the U.S. here too. |

I have found my Gambian friends to be racist about Nigerians. They say they are greedy and arrogant.
The Nigerians I have met in Gambia were at the hotel for a monetary conference. All well dressed business men. I think some of them did look down on The Gambian staff.....
Attitudes are difficult to change.
But as with all nations the group of people wealthy enough to travel abroad are not necessarily typical of their own people at home. USA is a good example of that. The average American citizen doesnt have a passport and doesnt travel very far at all. They are very inward looking. Nothing like the rich American tourists that make it to London. |

How can two people of the same race be racist to each other? Perhaps Bev could shed more light on this...Racist is a very strong term to just throw around...we need to be careful with words. |

According to my Gambian friends they are very different to Nigerians.
Racist comments to me are about any group decrying another group according to their roots, their birth. So English will be racist about irish and german. Canadians are racist about americans etc....
Gambians are racist about Nigerians.....and so on...
It's not right, but it happens.
Usually in a stereo type there is an element of truth that is exagerated.
If as a white person I said some of the things about Nigerians I have heard Gambians say, I would be called racist...so what's the difference?!

The difference is you are white and Nigerians are typically black. All I am saying is that you need to be careful with words and the context in which you use them. Perhaps xenophobic is a better choice of word in a situation you are trying to describe. |

Nigerias are the not the only scammers.
UK credit card scam hits Danes By The Copenhagen Post
26.06.08 Hundreds of Danish visitors to London over the past six months have had their credit card PIN codes stolen in a skimming scam
If you have visited a Starbuck's coffee house in London recently, you may want to check your credit card account for suspicious activity.
According to Norwegian media, the American chain has been the source of a skimming operation where credit card PIN codes have been stolen, leading to thousands of unauthorised purchases.
Over 600 Danes have been ripped off in the swindle so far, indicated PBS, the company that handles the Danish 'Dankort' debit card system. PBS spokesperson Søren Winge told public broadcaster DR that the scam only takes place when using the magnetic strip on the cards, not when using a card's microchip.
PBS would not reveal the total amount stolen on the 600 cards, but indicated that card owners are not responsible for the misused sums.
'Danish law stipulates that if a card or PIN code is lost or stolen, then either PBS or the customer's corresponding bank will normally cover the loss up to 1400 kroner,' Winge told The Copenhagen Post. 'But in a case like this where there was a widespread abuse of numerous cards, then the whole amount would be covered.'
The persons behind the scam were found to be operating out of the US, according to Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.
PBS recommends visitors to the UK to use caution when paying with their credit cards. (rc)
