A court on Tenerife has convicted a Senegalese to six years imprisonment for carrying a vessel with 88 Africans from Senegal to Tenerife last November. The journey lasted two weeks and claimed one victim while twelve others were transfered to hospital.
That is all I know about it so far.
Sorry, I had to correct my spelling once again

That is a very good start at least it would send a signal to the practitioners of trafficking this way that they shall be dealt with severely. Pecuniary interests of these pirates should be nipped in the bud ,they expose the youth to such perilous journeys any such legal moves would to some extent help curb the urge that any one may nurture.Back home too ,the various national governments should try to create suitable environments that would encourage the youth ;targets of such activities to engage in worthy enterprises and so give them hope; home-based I mean. The lack of such openings for some may entice them into taking such risks and thus perish as some do.The target nations too should now rethink their visa regimes which I believe is so rigid and unfair that some of the targeted youth feel they could never breach the barriers set up against them . If they could create positive avenues of employment as it is now the case between Senegal and Spain, where by youth are employed and issued visas to enable them to travel and work abroad ,that helps a lot.A desperate youth ,with no hope of getting any successful/meaningful life may be tempted to try the seas.Risky yes indeed but that is what is happening now.Blaming them or repatriation is a step but does it solve the problem? |

This conviction of a Senegalese doesn´t act as a deterrent if it is not reported in West African press, and I have not seen any reports.
The fact is that the various documentaries that has been shown in Senegal and other countries does not frighten young boys, on the contrary they think that life in the children camp on the Canary Islands is quite fun and they want to go there.
The arrivals are increasing, close to 3700 immigrants have arrived so far this year.
From 16 of June to 20 of June there were 10 different arrivals with 672 passengers, of them 98 children including 2 girls, 59 to 82 persons in each vessel.
In one of the groups were several in so bad condition, dehydrated and cold that 4 of them died the day after and 14 still remains in hospital.
Mauretanien genderme has found six partly rotten bodies on the shores outside Nouadhibou. A pathologist has stated that they died of hunger, thirst and cold and are therefore assumed to be West Africans trying to reach Europe. They never did.
Last Friday arrived a vessel from Senegal with 180 passengers.
Yesterday´s arrivals were 3 : 76 + 62 + 70 immigrants including 13 children.
