This kind of stuff is such nonsense it is hard to belief that people still subscribe to it in the 21st century. what is more dishartening is that educated and seemingly sophisticated people still think in this manner. Kebba, Deen, Alieu Jobe, Ndour cham Yaya Jammeh..... I mean is this crazy or what. What is even more troubling is that people who genuinly belief in Islam also find room in their faith for astrologers, fortune tellers, witch doctors, devils, demons, scarecrows, "ninkananko", evil eyes, the unseen, the ocult, goasts, spooks, creatures of the night, bad winds and evil eyes, "kondorono" and all kinds of hidden and unseen hazards and fetters.
To often we try to cure or avert these evil obstacles with bacteria infested "Safaro" (holey water), roots and berries of all dimensions and shapes, horns of evrything immerginable, cacases of all sorts, bones of every hue scattered in lands far and near. Tanned and untanned skins of unbelivable stench: from the musky and slightly rotten to the pungant smell of raw farts.
I mean is this nuts or what. This stuff we drink and the unbelivable bacteria it contains and the mirad of rotten things we subject our bodies to will kill us faster than all the witches, devils, "kondorong", "jalango" "Ninkaninko" doma.... combined. Yet a large underground economy trives on this nonsense. often they pitt families against family members, husbands with their wifes, neighbors. they simply rick havock in our society. Someone will be ill with yellow feaver but rather than take them to the hospital for treatement, people go to these so called holy men to somehow, through the mericle of some rotting goat skin intervene and it would all go away. I mean i will take my chances with the witch than to drink bacteria infested "Safaro". People wake up.
The second part of this is Marabou worship. When i was growing up, Bamba Tuba was more important to my family than God, his prophet, my parents and my whole family combined. So in the end, the little money my father made had to be shared with his marabou in senegal. So in the end, while we were struggling to make a living that marabou was living like a king.

Kajaw, you've forgotten to mention that our Kondorong in Bantaba is real and a well educated bard. No superstition about our(Bantabas) Kondorong's existence. It needs to be underscored u know. |

I believe in the physical world. The philosopher,Thales once said that in order to understand physical events we need to refer to other physical events. And Albert Einstein once said that even if he saw a ghost he would not believe it. But i think man has always been tempted to believe and worship the "unknown".Maybe that is how we have our great modern religions. And like Lenrie Peters said "how would this world be like without these great religions?. I have become so spoiled by science (facts and evidence) that i find it hard to accept anything less than that. Thanks. |

Kajaw, please accept my handshake. I salute you and your ideas on this subject. This is one of the areas where we definitely waste our time and resources. The socalled experts in this field realised what a lucretive industry it is and will do whatever it takes to protect it with cunning inteligence.
But thanks GOD that we are beginning to see the joke and deceite in it.
Let me add this though, bamba becareful of kondorong he might be talking in you. LAUGH!!. I am really loving it. This is why I am addicted to bantaba. |

Hey
Kondorong is real (laugh). I must say i was always scared of Kondorong as a young man and yet no one claims to have seen him. It was a way for some people to control and assume power in the community. The remnants are still around. There was a story of a messenger who used to work for NASA in Banjul and was revered for his JUJUS and one day had a problem with his american bosss. He boasted that he will die in feww days. One day, this boss complained of stomach problems and infact he had food poisoning.
Many believed that the messenger sent spirits to him and he was gaining more power within the staff. When the boss cam back after a few days, he was ok and stayed many more years before he was transferred. I believe it is always a matter of coincidence and when that happens, you gain respect for life. It is all about power struggle in society and takes different forms. A lot has to do with ignorance and because many people had no clue about Islam, the few families that did, controlled the "spiritual world" of our society.
Certainly there is more wealth being created in this sector more than any other in the Gambia. An average public servant will spend 20 to 40% of their annual income on this alone and infact it gained momemntum during the last ten years. The three sheep bought by Alieu Jobe is certainly more than his monthly salary and there are far more extreme examples like giving away a compound costing hundres of thousands of dalasis. |
“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.” |
