Hi I am new to the forum.

Please could you explain how the Gambian school system works. Is it free up to a certain age? Do children have to attend school etc? What is the best way to support a gambian child who wants to go onto further education?

Thankyou

jambo

Welcome, first question gambian school work 6 years 3 years and 3 years
that is equivalent to english styem, infant, juniors and seniors, (loosely) 5
Senior secondary 16-18
Junior Secondary/or Upper basic 13-16,
Lower basic, 5-12/13.
school is not compulsory, but a lot of parents will send the child to the nearest goverment school until they have finished lower basic.
Some lower basics are free but the school will charge for uniforms, school fund, some small amounts. Most can manage this.
Government Upper basic school can be 1500 dls pa
Senior Secondary can be high 3500 dls pa.
These are just starting figues lots of other things come into play, exam fees, out of school activities.
Best way to support a child is to pay direct to the school and get a RECEIPT.
Are you linked in anyway to a religion, gender, age etc that you are interested in. There are many webistes that are looking for sponsors.
Which country are you based in, you can link up and pay direct from you home country if you wish.
GOOD LUCK, it is rewarding to sponsor a child, BUT PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PROMISE AND WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

Jambo,
Your Last sentence is intreguing ,have you had your fingers burnt? or know someone who has, this warning would be helpfull to sponsors if they knew what the warning was.
