8th anniversary when students and a Red Cross worker were shot and killed with live ammunitions for demonstrating against the rape of a school girl Binta Manneh and the tragic death of another student Ebrima Barry.

All set for the day.
I tell you what: It was a sad day indeed. Since after the coroner's submission, it was actually determined that the students died of life ammunition. Most of the times, we mention only those that died, not knowing, tens of others are walking with amputated limps and hands uptil this hour, who even might be in need of our moral support, to say the least.
Perhaps in a life time, justice will flourish for the victims of those familes, both alive and gone. The truth remains those that committed this heneous crime are still at loose, walking scott-free in the streets of Banjul and elsewhere.
'LET JUSTICE GUIDE OUR ACTIONS.' National Anthem.
Note: What is saddens one even more, is the loud noise at the time that these students were armed or used by the opposition. None of that was true. If for anything, students were only armed with books, pens, pencils and their stationery materials. It just helps to show it all, how the truth can be twisted to put blame on these innocent students. It helps to show how arrogance & dishonesty can replace our pride, respect, common sense, nobility and humanitarian feelings. If your child, mother or father was a victim, i swear by whatever you believe in, you would have acted different and with caution of the manner and nature you dialogue about their affairs. Life can be truly selfish at times. O, yes!! If the tragedy is not on you, a friend or family member, then it is just an outside event.
May their souls rest in perfect peace. amen!!
The sensitivity of this topic makes me not to thread too much on it. At Gainako ends, we are ready for the rememberance of our fellow Gambians who were victims in one way or the other.

Brother Dalton1
Ask Bread Man why Jammeh(A/FPRC) kills, his answer will be that Jawara was bad enough. Bread Man alarmed that Gambians would have openly welcome "war criminal Charles Taylor" to justify Jammeh's illegality. He blames it on the past regime that angered Jammeh to rob power by coup. Therefore, according to him, Jawara's (PPP) past wrongs justify Jammeh's (A/FPRC) coup and continuous killing of innocent Gambians. Gambians better be warned.
May the gentle souls of all the victims rest in peace. Did you hear the Imam of Banjul organising special prayers for 10-11 April victims in 8 years? |

May their souls rest in peace.
10+11 April 2000 is still fresh in my mind. I have never seen anything like that save for the Kukoi mayhem of July 1981.
I was working at the time with a foreign consultant and as the trouble spread amidst sporadic gunfire i was literally caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. Not only was it dangerous to get in or out of Banjul at that time but anxiety alone was enough not to drive. So i was supposed to be at the wheels, but here is a foreigner with me scared to the bone and i can't dumphim and my family is on the other side. I was confused but one of the junior staff working in the dept gave me and the consultant sanctuary at his house till early evening. Driving home in through westfield the remains of burning tyres and ransacked Gamtel branch made my heart missed a beat.
It is one of the issues that i personally like to challenge Jammeh and his APRC . They cooked up investigations and the criminal indemnity given to all security officers alledgedly involve in the carnage beats my imagination. The truth can only be hidded for sometime and oneday it shall sprout up.
When a new gov't comes in one of their priorities must be to look into these massacres and un-explained killings and attempted murders. Only then will their souls rest in peace and their families breath a sigh of relief knowing atleast the truth about the death of their loved ones.
Rest in Peace Fallen Heroes |

Thanks bros. Madis & Karamba for sharing.
It's a case truly.
When they say students were armed, I wonder who they were refering to? Let each and everyone of us put themselves in the shoes of Omar Barrow or any of those student victims.

April 10th was one of the scariest days in my life. After killing students at GTTI, the belligerent security forces rounded up anyone wearing anything that looked like a school uniform.
I was saved by a really nice old lady who lived in Tallinding. She allowed me stay in her apartment till evening and then gave me her son's cloths to wear home.
A schoolmate standing two meters away from me, was shot and killed on the spot for no reason. I can still picture the paramilitary man's face. And thankfully, i don't believe in forgive or forget...
I'm positive that, way more than 14 students were slain. I challenge the authorities to publish the names of those killed if they really want me to believe that they only slew 14 people. That way, the general public can fill in the missing names!
The names should be given out at a national memorial service... |

Something that bugs me. It pokes me in my eyes, intestines, heart, mind and all other sensitive parts of my body. That until now, justice hasn't been rendered for the victims of these students.
September 2006, on my way from a Chicago Conference, One resident of Madison (Wisconsin) Mr. Jarjou shared with me about his cousin who lives in texas now...on a wheel chair. His leg is amputated. The boy was among the many survivors of April 10th or 11th. Who knows such might be online as well.
May the souls of the deceased rest in perfect peace. amen!!
The day is tomorrow.

The author of the piece, former GAMSU prexy -Omar Joof, now resides in Canada. It is a very touching tribute. At least, Omar like Nyabally, never forget to remind people that justice hasn't been rendered in the case of these 'fallen heroes.'

Eight Annual commemoration, April 10th/11th 2000 Student demos.. Compatriots and friends of The Gambia, Once again as we commemorate The April 10th/11th 2000 student demonstrations and their bloody aftermath, we humbly appeal to all of you to pray for the souls of our fallen comrades, and keep in mind the plight of our brothers maimed for life. They represent the best of our generation and their mission was one of the most noble. In line with the teachings and traditions of Mahatma Ghandi and Martin Luther King JR., their action was a peaceful struggle for justice, and so they remained until the forces of evil attacked them. For eight years now we have been relentless in our calls for justice, but all our calls have been ignored by The government of president Yaya Jammeh. The government of The Gambia remains defiant and refuses to admit the crimes it committed against us eight years ago. Eight years indeed is enough time for any person to come to terms with crimes committed against others, feel remorse and endeavour to rectify wrongs; but eight years is too long a time in which to treat the victims of callous state sponsored crimes in disdain. As far as president Yaya Jammeh and his cronies are concerned, their political conveniences are more important than our pains; and their hankerings to control all of us more essential than our human rights.
After eight years, it is obvious to all except those in denial that president Yaya Jammeh simply lacks the courage to see justice done as regards April 10th/11th 2000. As long as he is president of The Gambia, our wounds would not heal. We therefore urge all Gambians and friends of The Gambia to start making efforts to constitutionally vote him out of power. Though his regime has rigged the electoral process, if Gambians overwhelmingly demand during elections that he should go, he would have no option but to leave. As a result, we call on all opposition leaders in The Gambia to put aside their differences and unite, for the good of The Gambia. As for the combatants of April 10th/11th 2000, we urge you all to remain steadfast in the struggle for justice . On this solemn occasion, we reiterate our trust in everyone of you. We are positive that the bond that binds us shall survive the test of time, as it has been consecrated by blood of the martyrs. We thank you all for your solidarity.
NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER!
