I hope members here will be able to help me. I'm planning on motorbiking from the UK to Gambia late this year and wanted to know if there was any way I could legally leave my motorbike in Gambia by gifting it to someone. I'm quite aware of what's needed to cross boarders and I know leaving a vehicle in a country can incur import costs, but is there any way around this WITHOUT breaking local Gambian law or using the twin passpost system?
Once in The Gambia you will find the Asset Office above the Timbookto shop at the Sabena juction, Fajara.
The above work with the different rallies that end up in Banjul i.e. Plymouth Banjul Challenge - eventually selling off their vehicles. Hopefully they will put you in the right direction.
I am of the understanding that as your motorbike will not be registered it will make it illegal in the country for private sale. Which could result in the new owner facing problems and impoundment.
The world would be a poorer place if it was peopled by children whose parents risked nothing in the cause of social justice, for fear of personal loss. (Joe Slovo - African revolutionary)
what a brilliant/foolish trip, go Chump, if all else fails why not just sell it for a silly amount 100 dls, then it becomes his legally., just a thought.
Thank you for helping out with the information Sab I'll email them now. I've also decided to make another visit within the next 2 months so I'll try and get this agreed whilst there.
Chump its anything but foolish really. I want to make the trip but only one way. The motorbike I'll use won't be valuable enough to warrant shipping back to the UK, so I thought as a kind gesture I'd surprise my Gambian friend who is always on hand to help me when on holiday.
