The Gambia College Students’ Union Holds Congress

On the 13 of March, 2008, the Gambia College students converged at the college auditorium to witness the first ever students’ congress, since the inception of the amalgamated student union at the Brikama Campus.

The congress attracted students’ from the four sister schools under the first academic tertiary institution of The Gambia college, such as schools of Nursing and Midwifery, Public Health, Agriculture and Education.
In his opening remarks, the newly elected union President, Mr. Musa LT. Camara, said the aim of the congress is to clearly read out the constitution to the general membership of the union, and also explain to them the efforts made to realize success in certain areas, such as the increment of stipend, facilitation of students’ transport, campus life in the college and renovation of the common room.
According to the President, these are challenges and responsibilities which they are confronted with as the general student body and it is in line with the promises made during the campaign period which they must fulfill.

The executive made an interpretation of some parts of the constitution to the congress regarding the clauses that deal with their activities and what to do with  executive members who are proven to be incompetent and inefficient.
The Union president vowed that he shall not welcome mismanagement of students’ funds or facilities. He concluded by calling on the general membership to strictly adhere to the rules guiding the activities of the union and to join existing clubs, societies, and associations  with the objective of taking the college to the higher stage they are yearning for.

Mr. Bakary Sanneh, Secretary General of the union, gave a comprehensive report on the activities of the union since from the inauguration of the executive in December to date. All the executive members were reported to have registered progress in their various ministries, as well as faced challenges.
According to the Secretary General, the education sector, under the leadership of Mr. Masainey Ceesay, sent a delegation to Janjanbureh in order to expand the membership of the union as well as to establish cordial relationship with the students there. Educational materials were given to the college including computers, photocopiers etc.  Activities that are education related were also held, such as the recent Art/Care  aimed at boosting the morale of students as well as showing their potentials to the Gambian populace and the entire globe.

The transport sector, being a great source of income generation for the union, has been given maximum attention by Mr. Mamut Saine, which helps in facilitating the students’ movements and the maintenance of the bus is also in progress.

The Information sector is the department that collaborates with the Press Club and the print and electronic media concerning the activities of the Union. This department has embarked on capacity building on ethics of journalism and writing skills so for members. It was facilitated by media practitioners from both print and electronic media.
In its bid to help raise funds for the Union, the Agriculture sectorAgriculture is promised to be given an empty plot of land for farming.

The office of the Secretary General is responsible for the correspondent between the union and government departments, parastatals and other stakeholders or partners in the development of education. The sector acquired three computers which were later distributed to schools. Successes are also reported to have been registered by the Colleges’ departments that are under the student union like Health, Finance and Sports.
Mr. Malick Faal the Finance Minister gave a financial report on the Union’s activities followed by the Auditor general’s report.

The congress was ended with a question and answer session chaired by Mr. Dawda Samba from School of Nursing and Mid-wivery (SRN).
