I Have Fired till I Have Nothing to Fire - President Jammeh Monday 3rd April 2006
By Pa Modou Faal & Osman Kargbo
President Yahya Jammeh has said the problem of NAWEC is not lack of capacity or human resource but one of management.
“I have fired and fired until now I have nothing to fire,” said the President at the state opening of the National Assembly last Friday.
He vowed that he is going to solve the epileptic electricity situation in the country before the commencement of the forthcoming AU Summit.
the above statement culled from the Point newspapers goes to confirm that firing staff is not a solution. What Mr. President needs to do is overhaul the sytem and put in place practical solutions. Individuals work within a system and if that is not changed, nothing improves because the next person in has to adapt.
This means that his firing policies are wrong. Quite often only innocent and hardworking Gambian are fired because they are opposition sympathisers an ideology promoted by the Green Boys who are bent on dubious things like favouritism.
It also means that he should not make hasty decisions and then realises that a lot of the peole were victims of personal or some family issues that had nothing to do with their job. public servants are not politicians and to make them one only stifles creativity and independent judgement. The encroachment of the politicians into the Civil Service should stop if Nawec and other departmets have to become assets rather than as liabilities on the tax payer.
Yaya has now started to recycle the very own people he has said were "durumors". It is true as he said that he has one million Gambians to chose from but i dont know at what price. He is realising that it is quality and not quantity and it takes years to produce a high caliber civil servant and institutional memeory is very important for continued growth and advancement. It costs a lot of money to train the scarce man power and all are wasting at home or overseas doing menial jobs like flipping burgers or waiting tables in the restaurants.
Gambia is the only looser as these western countries have access to a highly skilled labor they did not invest in.Nawec and all our public institutions have suffered a lot of interferance and no one is comfortable of making important decisions for fear of being dismissed and the nation is waiting on one individual to move on. There are things best done by politicians and ceratinly does not include managing the civil service. i was suprised to see the president at Maccarthy Square cordinating the distribution of tractors to farmers. What a joke. The ministry of Agriculture is better positioned to handle this but only the so called APRC suporters were allocated tractors and opposition members in the country cannot have access to these equipment on their farms. What happended was that all the millions have been wasted. The tractors ended up as a loss with no management system in place. I want yaya to tell us what happened to the tractors. No one has yet been brought to book because they are APRC supporters and as supporters, they can get away with anything and that is development. Green boys ended up using them to ferry sand and gravel to build their own homes whilst the farms are wallowing and being choked by weeds. There are too many examples to state but one thing is important, the Civil service has to be allowed to be independent of politics.
May be this will be a wake up call for him and i hope he realises it.

It should be plain to everyone by now that The Gambia's problem will only exacerbate under yaya's government but will never mitigate. The guy does not know how to motivate people to perform. He thinks he is a lord that can drive people towards any direction he wishes.
Hello authoritative jammeh, welcome to the contemporary world. Well you know now that you alone cannot effect any thing. You will always need people until you take your place in the graveyard, even after that you still need people to be praying for you for your Lord's mercy which you are denying your subjects.
Every statement you have ever made is a disgrace to me. You have always vendicated your critics. You have been an accident to the smiling coast and it has now turned into the crying and yelling coast.
I sound like I hate, no I do not hate you but I hate your attitute. I honestly do.
MAY ALLAH EXTRICATE US FROM YOUR CLUTCHES SOONER RATHER THAN LATER. |

Sorry but you cannot ignore the issues sometimes. I think the statement means that he is lost and really frustrated a sign that he has rarely shown. may be he is becoming more matured and now knows that people cannot be forced to love their leaders. he as to be able to earn this. |

I sometimes wounder whether Almighty is not seing this Idol woshipper hypocritly pretending he love God more than even Mohammad and all the prophets (PBOT).While he at the same time organises sexual jambories in kanilai every week. God I wish the man can be enlightened so that he has some little brain in him."I have fired until I cannot fire any more" what a statement! It makes me sick I sometimes wonder how many Gambians really are true servants of God(and not just norminal muslims and christians).Jammeh's behaviour is caused by no other than our own religious hypocretical people(both muslims and christians).when Jammeh invites religious elders to state house for a chat,The best chance they can have to advise him, instead they go there only to eat, drink and praise him.Everybody seems "I will not be the first to tell him least people may see me as anti Jammeh" .God do they really fear YOU or little Jammeh compared to you? As God SAID ...Bismilahi rahmani Rahim... 'AFA LATA KHAFUU'HUM,WAH FUU'NI IN'KUN'TUM MUH MINUN"( Oh you who belief, fear no body and turn to no one except ME if you are real believers") Praise be to Allah. In the Bible God said "thy shall worship none but the real father in Heaven for He alone knowth what you keep in you heart" If these words are truely God's words and the very people that preach it to people, would instead behave the very oposite, sometimes leaves you woundering should I belief them or should I follow God my own way?.What is wrong then?Is it fear ,Greed,or what? Why can't people we think as representatives of our faiths going the very opposite way instead of God's chosen way? peace Mankajang Janyanfara |

Thanks for your wonderful comments and analysis of the grassroot problems at home, the menace and tenacity of Jammeh and his cohorts, corruption of public servants and hypocrisy of average Gambians at all levels of authority, general paranoid to challenge Jammeh's authority in his decisions to promote his ideals exclusively to control all nations' assets and resources. We all understand the political issues confronting us but we lack collective ideas to coordinate ourselves to address them. Am deeply sorry from the contributions that its very difficult to pick out solutions. |

Janyanfara, you have said it all.I think we have another model of islam not the one preach to us by muhammed.I cant believe the kind of things i see in the gambia and yet still they do everything in the name of islam.
- its good to backbite -its cool to have sexual intercourse -its very good to steal -its normal to lie -its normal to tax Banjul brewries and we use that tax revenue -its halal to have lottery - its good to bribe
Unfortunately is very unislamic to smoke weeds and drink alcohol. In some communities, you will be outcasted if found out.To my little understanding about islam,i think almost all of the above belongs to great sins. But why do we care about certain aspects of it and consider some worthwhile? The new form of islam is surfacing.
Disapointments are everywhere. If you think of politics you haven`t taste societal beliefs.
Thanks

The burning issues to revitalise NAWEC and address utilities; both electricity and water is not about indescriminate firing, hiring, motivating or demoralising the management team and entire staff. NAWEC is highly capital intensive and requires experts and a lot of capital outlay, finance, short-term and long-term strategies. Over the years the amount of resources or what has been disbursed on July 22, Roots, monthly Kanilai cultural rituals, celebrations and celebrations all the time could have made electricity a thing of the past. Our Government enjoy suandering resources and entertain people with food and drinks, slaughtering lots of cows, sheep, goat, pigs and poultry all the time. Our neighbours have solve this and there is rural electrification in very remote areas and fibre optical cables along main roads in all its regions. Europeans have seen development through sincerity and hard work. |

You are right. Nawec needs capital investment and projects like Arch 22 should have been diverted to this course. The Arch has become a white elephant and a drain on our economy. i must say that i cannot agree more.

yaya says he is a muslim. haven't you seen the praying beads and the big Outhman Danfodio attires. I am not sure he would like to join the forum because he is quick tempered and cannot take criticism. Secondly ther is one out there who cant advise him. |
