Endless promblems with africom. The new unit will initially be based in Stuttgart/German, also home to the military's European Command, and it is expected to be in full operation by September this year.
After two to three years in Stuttgart, the command is expected to move to an as yet undetermined location in Africa. The goal is for (Africom) to be on the African continent! Bush said "This new command will strengthen our security cooperation with Africa and create new opportunities to bolster the capabilities of our partners in Africa, Africa Command will enhance our efforts to bring peace and security to the people of Africa and promote our common goals of development, health, education, democracy and economic growth in Africa."
And Defence Secretary, Gates puts more on plan "This command will enable us to have a more effective and integrated approach than the current arrangement of dividing Africa between Central Command and European Command -- an outdated arrangement left over from the Cold War," He said. But Bush said to the press in Ghana that this all is nothing but „baloney,“ Or, as we say in Texas, that's bull… Bush's words, spoken during a joint appearance with Ghanas President, were about as direct as it can get. And the reason for the outburst was clear: Throughout the week as the US president has traveled to Benin, Tanzania, Rwanda,Ghana and, Liberia. Worries have been spreading across Africa that the Bush administration is planning to build military bases on the continent.
Thats why John Kufuor Said” Africom should Stay in Stuttgart”!! Kufuor even brought it up in their private meeting prior to the press conference. "You're not going to build any bases in Ghana," A muzzle? "I understand," Bush responded. "Nor do we want to." Are sure Mr Bush?
Despite the soft rhetoric, a number of African countries are concerned that AFRICOM is part of an effort to increase US power on the continent. Libya, Nigeria and South Africa have all expressed concern that Washington is pursuing an expansion of power in part to protect US interests in African oil.
But all The storming of criticism will not led American to backpedalling, this is clear as crystal, it is just mater of the time.
get an old news from here about the strategy. http://www.stripes.com
