THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL

Defectors To APRC Paraded

By Omar Dem

At an APRC rally held at Sankabari Village in Upper Fulladu West, Central River Division on Friday March 24, 2006, over 100 purported NRP supporters defected to the APRC. These people, who were paraded in front of the gathering, were led by Momodou Keita, and Mariama Njie, the NRP Chairman and Chairwoman respectively. The defectors informed the gathering that they have now defected to the ruling party with all their followers.

The Secretary of State for Agriculture and the APRC National Mobiliser, Mr. Yankuba Touray, told the gathering that the NRP cannot bring development to their village. He that when he was coming to the village, he realised that they needed good roads and good water supply for their cattle. He told them that Mr. Hamat Bah cannot do this for them, arguing that he can only bring bicycles and radios for them. “My wife can even bring those things to you,” Mr. Touray said. He also called on Hamat Bah to stop “tribalising” politics.

Mr. Touray said that Mr. Ousainou Darboe cannot become a President, describing him as a very big coward. To show that Mr. Darboe was a very big coward, Mr. Touray said, that before the counting of ballots in the 1996 elections, Mr. Darboe ran away to seek refuge in an embassy, leaving his supporters in a dilemma.

On the recent coup plot, Yankuba assured the gathering that these were soldiers who do not even know how to handle a gun. He told them that the soldiers were arrested and that President Jammeh is capable of restoring stability.

A defector, Koba Fatty, said he was also leaving the UDP because he has not seen any progress in the party, adding that they should not to hate those bringing development but to appreciate them.

On his part, the Secretary of State for Works and Construction, Bala Garba Jahumpha challenged Halifa Sallah for critising the APRC Government for taking loans to build things such as the TV, which Mr Jahumpa said Halifa is even using. He added that as for Mr Omar Jallow, (O.J), he needs to explain to the public where they have spent the loans they took in their 30 years of rule.
