Daily News Water Engineer Detained By The Gambia Journal Feb 23, 2008, 09:21
Banjul, The Gambia Journal Reports reaching the Gambia Journal suggest that one Alhagy Ass Njie, a young water engineer, has been in detention since Sunday 17th February. Mr. Njie who used to work for the Department of Water Resources resigned from his government position last year to switch to a position in one of President Yahya Jammeh’s numerous private business outfits. Before the arrest, Mr. Njie headed a unit that hired out its bore-hole drilling services to both government and the public at large. The government department used to undertake most of such contracts until when President Jammeh’s KGI (Kaninlai Garden International) procured drilling machines and brought Mr. Njie from the government department. A source at the department told the journal that “Mr. Njie’s switch to the private sector paralyzed the department, rendered many employees redundant and was a disservice to the nation.” According to the source, Mr. Njie’s troubles started with the arrest of State House guard Lt. Camara who was last month arrested together with two others for alleged stealing of a government vehicle and economic crimes. Informants say it was in relation to that investigation that police came up with information implicating Mr. Njie for alleged impropriety together with Lt. Camara. A series of employees of President Jammeh’s businesses have been recently dragged to the courts for various charges of alleged stealing.
