Turkish political system is influenced by european as well. On theory it is great, but practical terms, there are serious issues.

One of them is the role of military on executive. The military see themselves as a defender of radical secularism and it influence government. In democracies, only public would do that using the political process, military has clear job to do. Protect the nation from international threats.

The other issue is judiciary system sometimes wants to take over legislative and executive parts of the system. On democracy, roles of legislative, executive and judiciary branches are clearly defined.

Other similar issue is 'deep government'. The powerful individuals in the government would act illegally for personal/ideological interests. For example, corruption or assasination of key government officials in the name of ideology.

All above problems can be found in even european democracies. Major problem with Turkish democracy is human rights abuses. Rights of Kurds, women with scarf, women without scarf, students, working classes are serious issues. As Turkey is progressing with the EU accession period, they are getting better, but this may take a decade to establish EU standard.

------------------------------------------------

The child asks his father. What is the difference between theory and practice. The father tries to explain from dictionary, provide definition etc, but the child does not understand. Than father says, 'ok, i will give you an example. Go to your mother and tell her that our neighbour wants to sleep with her. If she says 'no', tell her the neighbour is willing to give 5000 dollars' The child goes to mother tell her that. The mother get upsets, but she says 'well, I love my husband but we could use this money for the mortgage payment'.

Than father ask the child to go her sister and to tell her, 'our neigbour wants to sleep with you, and he would give you a diamond ring you became his lover'. The child tells that her sister. Her sister, first get angry, but than she likes the idea.

Than child goes to his father and tell him, he still did not understand anything from the example.

Father says: Well on theory we have 5000 dollar and a diamond ring, on practise we have two 'prostitutes' at our home competing for the same man.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

Of course she could. Actually, turkish women hold more powerful positions like prime-minister in Tansu Ciller (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tansu_%C3%87iller) prior to the latest government. A turkish women was heading constitutional court a few months ago she was retired. A turkish women is holding president of the industrial and business association (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arzuhan_Yal%C3%A7%C4%B1nda%C4%9F) . Another turkish women is candidate for the presidency of European Human Rights Court. 50 out of 500 members of turkish parliement are women. It is not perfect but it is much better than the gambia.

Turkey complied with the EU criterias including the political criteria and started accession talks. In 10-15 years they will became the EU member.

I did not and cannot say that the Gambian women are better than Turkish women, but I am appalled by your recalcitrant statement that "Turkish women are better than Gambian women".You have no idea how many Gambian women, intellectuals and professionals are in Gambia and abroad. But then here you are sitting in Australia, married to a Gambian woman... Read the link above and see the true condition of Turkish women for yourself.
Also the new Islamist government in Turkey has already started lifting the ban on the hijab. The worry is that pretty soon the beautifull faces of all the Turkish women will disappear. Turkey in the European Union? probably never...
Thank you.

We are not discussing which women is better. Which women has better situtation in terms of political opportunity.

Aha. One more time, your fascist ideology appears here. You are not any different as iranian fascists force women to cover. Your version is; you legislate how women dress up.

Ban on hijab is fascist. So are you.

That is still inacurate. Do you at all have an idea of the number and extent of Gambian women in political and other professional careers? What is the proportion of that to their Turkish counterparts? You need to know the answers to these questions first before making a short-sighted prejudiced remark about Gambian women. Go back and read the article I have linked above for you, and see for yourself the pitiful backsliding of the so-called freedom of Turkish women. Many scholars argued that that freedom was not there in the first place, it was a facade to put a human face to the previous dictatorships in Turkey.
I have told you that the Islamist government in Turkey has started lifting the ban on the hijab; this by itself may not be a problem but some are worried that down the road an enforcement of the hijab is going to follow. That is what makes it problematic. But then you probably do not even know anything about Turkey...

Next time talk about the issues you are familiar with. Not politics. Stick with the poetry.
