Hi members and contributors,
Can some body please exchange ideas on this important topic?

The appointment of Robert Mugabe to a senior post in the African Union may look like a snub to President Bush; in reality, though, it is a snub to the wretched people of Zimbabwe.

The AU seems set to go the way of its predecessor, the Organisation for African Unity, in becoming a haven for crooks and tyrants. This is partly because, in common with other international bureaucracies, it is not answerable to anyone, leaving its members free to arrange things in their own interest.

Which is precisely the problem with many of its member states. Governments that do not have to face elections quickly start running the country for their own benefit. Zimbabwe is, perhaps, an extreme example, but is hardly unique: many African states are treated as the personal property of their rulers.

Apologists are always ready with their excuses: these countries are undeveloped, they need more aid, their borders were drawn up arbitrarily by colonial rulers. And it is true that the West must take some responsibility for the terms of its hasty disengagement; but, decades after independence, that excuse is wearing thin.

Mr Mugabe's fellow heads of state are motivated, not by African solidarity, but by the deeper solidarity that exists among authoritarian rulers. They resent the West less from lingering anti-colonialism than because liberal democracies are a living rebuke to Africa's despots and a beacon to her reformers.

President Bush told his audience that Africans must solve their own problems; he looks like having a long wait.

My belief is Africa is getting worse due to her leaders what is wrong?Do we deserve this really?

I think Mr. Bush looks as if he himself has a lot of problems he is not able to solve...

I dont even know how to take it,its like making Sadam or milosevic head of human rights.Mugabe and a lot other despots have failed their people and the continent and making them head of the AU is a slap in the face. This is the reason i never had fatih in the AU in first the place. They are a bunch of crooks and despots stiffling and robbing their people.

i think AU is useless, its headed by the same people who starve, kill and abuse their own people. the first goals of AU, which was to eventually end up like EU, is never going to happen when the same people destroying africa are the ones heading it, plus, it seems like its a club for them to support each other and prevent others from meddling in their affairs, in other words, the crimes they commit in their countries.

You have rightly said it all,
The AU is definately a club.did you know that after they promised never to allow anymore coups, they've just invited col.Val from Mouritania to join?.I sometimes woulder how can a rebel condemn a fellow rebel.AU has now more rebels than real democratically elected members and I want to imagine who can blame who.

its so sad but it can only happen in africa. our leaders have disrespected us so much that we are the laughing stock of the world. not only that, a union that supposed to be beneficial for us africans is now a place that fortifys our biggest criminals. its a shame, i don't know what's wrong with our leaders: is it lack of pride, lack of education, our leaders are an embarrassment.

No Gassma,
In the early 70s,Black people were brutalised in Europe.Expacially at (Home) Africa, and away in America,Germany and Britain, the Nazis, clux cos clan and the National Front together with the police were brutalizing Black. We were the minority but the majority in their criminal records and prisons. Now is a bit better but we still their most dangerious criminals and prisoners.
If we have no peace ibn our own Africa, a place we call home and Babylon, where on earth can we have where we will feel at ease?

Despite all that, I hope things will be better one day as we get more educated and enlightened

kassma, the AU has a lot left to be desired. They are inconsistent, and are a constant embarrassment to Africa in general and black people in particular. The secretariat is not functioning; the NEPAD office is a joke. The trade polices aren’t even worth the paper they are written on, and the mind set seems to be to let the EU and UN do all the leg work for them and they would just get paid. The PRM is not functioning, and the milestones are completely off track. More disturbing is the fact that the core principles of rule of law and participartroy democacry have been binned:
1. Nigeria- Obasanjo is ‘flirting' with a 3rd term-which is unconstitutional
2. Senegal- Wade may do the same if he can get away with it
3. Gabon- Omar Bongo has been in power for three decades plus and will likely die in power
4. Togo- Eyadema died and saved the seat of power for his son, who won by literally stealing the ballots (we all saw it on CNN)
5. Kenya-Kebaki came to root out corruption and was more corrupt than his predecessor
6. Gambia-Jammeh wants and will have a 3rd term, and is the most incompetnat and corrupt president on the continent, he is hosting the next AU meeting

The list can go on. It is a shame. Unless we reform, FAST and Mbeki can lead this effectively; we should just scrap the whole thing, save our limited monies in running a failed secretariat (most do not even pay their dues), and do our lobbying directly with our former colonial masters. There is at least more dignity in naked shamelessness than pretence, and 99% of all current African heads of state are shameless, they are the laughing stock of their people, and their contemporaries, on all continents.

I can't believe a whole continent (a continent with a long colonial period, and full of resources) has so many corrupt and brutal political leaders. There must be something else behind this all.

This is why Africa is the laughting stock of the world. We must now stop blaming the West for our problems and start facing our stupid and arrogant leaders particularly those blood stained leaders in the AU.

Their stupidity and arrogance is what is dragging the continent deeper and deeper into vicious trouble. We must start organising huge mass demonstrations at every summit venue and bitterly vent our anger at them. They are our servants and must start making policies that benefit us.

All these tousy bunch are interested in is to fill their deep pockets. Very aimless and stupid embiciles.

You have forgotten about prayers. It can do everything you know. May be we should have a 40 days fasting and prayer.

“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.”

konds, listen am a bit mystified. You had that turban round your shoulder like that grand marabout, and now you keep smashing your forehead on that table all day.

Who has made you angry? Is it yaya? Don't worry you are not alone, he has angered everybody. I thaught that kind of volatility had been removed from you since your Armitage days. Calm down.
