Well Standard Charter has branches in the UK as well as Gambia although you cannot put your money in one and transfer it to another.
Whilst we are on the subject Jambo- My project was so successful that it paid for three people to set up their own business whilst I was there:
1 single parent of two was funded to start her own vegetable stall outside her compound.
1 craftsman at at SeneGambia Craft Market wanted to change his business in the rainy season. We did a deal: He gave me a large wooden crafted woman to sell in UK.(proceeds go back into my project) I gave him a large box of clothes and shoes- he sold them in 7 days and made £100 - I have also sold another large wooden statue in the UK and Im sending him the money,
1 Video Club set upin Brikama with a family of 14
2 volunteers came out rom the UK - One is paying for electricity to be installed in the families house in Brikama
Anyway, I made contact with a man from "micro fimms" He came and spoke with the people involved with my project. Micro Fimms is a sort of credit union NGO organisation. It assists males and females to set up in business. The cost of having a savings account is alot cheaper than opening a bank account, which many Gambians cannot afford. They have branches in Bakau and Brikama but come and collect money personally from you You need 250 dalasi to open the account plus 50 dalasi for your account book - THIS IS A SIMPLE AND AFFORDABLE WAY OF SETTING UP A BANK ACCOUNT.It may also proove to government organisations that people are capable of running a business and saving money ? (Visa applications etc ? Although if you borrow the interest is quite high ! If anyone is interested in learning more - just let me know
Sorry I have diverted from your original question, but I thought you may find this info. useful.

Tapa, I think that you will find that Standard Charter(Gambia) is seperate from other Standard Chartered banks. I like your diversion though.

thanks taps, the micro finance sound good, i have helpt with small business a stall in serrunkunda market, the fish business in jufreh, palm oil in niuma. I might look into this because i think it might help them get on tthe next stage, being able to show that you can manage finance is a good skill. it does not sound to much to open an account, do they have to open the account with proof of person or address. toubab1020, from the replies it seems the answers are NO. . |

Jambo,I am sure you know very well that addresses in the western sense don't exist in Gambia,as regards who you are the same applies unless you get into complicated stuff like fathers name mothers name where did they come from etc,so fair play to the banks I don't really see how they could operate a "secure system".

so how do you open the micro finance account , i take what you say it is hard to be "identified" as in the western way, and that is a barrier to fiancial institutions operating in Gambia. ID is so easy to buy, |

The man from Micro Fimms said you need two passport size photgraphs - You did not need an address
The borrowing rates were quite high - If you borrow £100 it has to be paid back within 2 months. If you borrow over a longer period of time the interest rate is 30% The man said that the women fruit sellers on the beach are good customers of Micro Fimms and make a steady living through selling their fruit ! Many people think this service is for women only but this particular organisation cater for men as well

When you go to Trust bank all you need is two passport photos. I took my passport as ID and signed a sample signature. They also record you on their camera.
My Gambian friend didnt have a passport at the time. He just signed and gave a PO box address of a friend.
I saw many womens details of accounts with their finger print as proof of id.
