There's more than one way to become a nurse. But, generally the training is organised by Gambia College. If the student is lucky enough to get on to this course there are no fees. You can also train direct with Bansang and RVH hospitals - at bansang, certainly, you have to apply direct. But these positions are seriously over-subscribed and you have to have a good grade 12 certificate to even be considered.
I don't know about sewing although I know there is one women's centre for skills development in Bundung. As to woodwork - I have a student at GTTI now doing "Timber Vocations" course. He started at the skills Centre in Banjul for the first year because his certificate was not great but is now finishing his second year at GTTI proper. He's done brilliantly. These courses last from one to three years. The longer, in some respects the better but anything is better than nothing. The fees were around 5,500 but we also had to help with transport and with buying some tools (not that expensive!).
Hope that helps |

lily you are a star, it is an investment that i have to consider, i wil look into the training at gambia college, perhaps they will need extra lessons, it seems so long away, but have to thnk now. the student you have at gtti, will they get work when they have finished the course. i do agree that anything is better than nothing. As I am not promising to pay for life, just to give a helping hand in getting started. |

I hope so Jambo - but like everything - it may be who you know not what you know! Still, with qualifications, skills and his own tools - I'm hopeful he'll get work!
The other place to think about is Hotel school. This trains people in 4 areas: Reception, Bar, Waiting and Housekeeping. During their course they all have placements and so get experience. Some are lucky enough to get permanent jobs after ...... (they need grade 12 to get in) |
