Those who are baffled by the EC recent statement refuting information about EC relations with Gambia government need to reel the tape for better view of the reality. Gambia is a sovereign state. The EC like any other organization is a DEVELOPMENT PARTNER. Gambian citizens be they journalists or ordinary tax payers in society have a mandate to say or write on what they feel about the way government operates. The EC has no mandate to interfere in that. In the look of things, it appears that Daily Observer (Gambia) chooses to portray the EC as an unshakable authority. Each and every Gambian media outlet has more power than the UN, EC, Commonwealth and all international organizations put together and in their individual scale of mandate. It is therefore out of place that the EC statement is blown so loud by Gambia government and their media wing, Daily Observer.

http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/article/2007/12/13/eu-delegation-reacts-to-pseudojournalism

Much of the noise is further echoed by those who thought the EC denial is all conclusive. The EC has no power to stop Gambian media from probing into every government activity. It is up to government of Gambia to moderate their own good conduct of public affairs. When things go wrong, they will be addressed and no international development partner has the mandate to interfere in that. The evidence is that while Gambians continue suffering and crying under a cruel military dictatorship, all the international agencies know about it. Because of their restricted mandate, they will in no way come to our aid. Only Gambians have the power to tackle a criminal government and that is exactly what our good brothers and sisters in the media are doing. They are doing good job and deserve all the support.

Karamba,
This paragraph has is a cut and paste from the article from the observer. Is it ajoke or do you possess another article that is correctly quoted or what?
"What H.E Mr Hervio said, on the contrary, is that we are exploring new projects in these fields in the 10th EDF. It is also mentioned in this article that "the EU’s Ambassador’s critical statement came as a surprise to many and signals the coming of new tensions between government and the EU". I can assure you that there are simply no tensions at present between The Gambia Government and the European Union."

this is a diplomat arena.the ec representative in senegal or gambia can only remain in those countries by the wishes of the state.what happen to the un AIDS COORIDANATOR AFTER SHE ACCUSSES MAD PRESIDENT OF DILUTING THE EFFORTS OF AIDS CAMPAIGNERS ? even with our little power in the international club ,our country ruler pocesses the power to expel any foriegn representaives whom they deem unwelcome.the EC don't have the time to argue with us.it is better they issue sweet words that the jamerites can swallow and then make a big meal of .that doesn't mean the ec and our government don't have any uncomfortable issues.why didn't our government lay its hand on the millinium democracy aid parkage ? who can deny that we have a bad human rights records ? some of you make us vomit.tiny whiny issues that favours yahya's image is taken as a license to brak .remember ,ec or no ec yahya presided over the killing and burning of koro ceesay's dead body, he knew who killed deyda and the scores of death soldeirs of november 11.why do we even have to make an issue of an unimportant diplomat saga? yahya's government can even expell the u.s ambassador if he feels the guy is not being coorperative with his government ,that will not make the u.s take us for an instance enemy ,they have thousand and one other diplomats to replace the sacked one.what is the matter with the jammeh circle ? all you jump at is some silly mistake by a news paper and you feel that is an endorsement of the killer in state house.take a hike the lot of you.

"And among His signs is the creation of heavens and the earth, and the difference of your languages and colours. verily, in that are indeed signs for men of sound knowledge." Qu'ran

Alhassan,

The cut and pasted piece from Daily Observer is relevant for public consumption. A good reason for bringing it into focus is mainly for exposing the triviality of Daily Observer and their bankruptcy of purpose. No matter how much the EC or EU stands by any government of the day in Gambia the citizenry is most important. The way EU /EC treats Gambia is by no peculiar prestige of any government. That is the game of diplomacy and not a flavoured soup dished out to a particular government. There is a serious problem about killings and stealing of public resources by Jammeh and his current government. That is an issue not small enough to be thrashed. The fat tail of injustice perpetrated by Jammeh and all his brutal accomplishes will be dragged thousand miles if that is enough to deliver justice in the best. Jammeh will ever wish he had not killed even a small rodent in Gambia not to mention good humans. It is proper that every blessed day Gambians get reminded about the many killings Jammeh carried out in Gambia.

It has been captured in your many postings where you challenge Gambians to drag Jammeh to local or international courts. May be you need being reminded that such processes are subject to vigorous protocols and for Gambia under Jammeh, there is no such legal environment to permit the orderly process of law prevail. If you have some ideas about how we are able to drag Jammeh to court without hindrance do help us.

Janyanfara,

The issue under the hammer is that Gambia Journal wrote a piece about the EC/EU and Government of Gambia (GG) It was not so palatable on the menu of people of GG. When the EC/EU wrote a rejoinder to that piece, it was taken up by the entire GG and their media wing Daily Observer as though the Gambia Journal is proved wrong in what they wrote. The noise became louder as they repeatedly bounced back on the issue and began calling every other independent Gambian media body names. The point to take note is that from day one, when he robbed the seat of power in Gambia, Jammeh has flatly misused the media to convey his image. That started with the radio. Then he quickly installed TV transmitters to cast his image before Gambians as an imposed bid for acceptance. What he now hates and something he holds no control over is the might and manner independent media is exerting such heavy impact on the fragile image he insists on building.

Over here on Bantaba, the staunch Jammeh bidders want us to swallow that the EC/EU refuted what Gambia Journal published; meaning that Gambia journal and all other independent Gambia media are worthless haters of developments in Gambia. Do you agree with them, Janya?

Don't you forget the funny ridule; electric wire to the switch, and once switch "ON", then you hear a "shout."

It was another nice editorial from them too, "cyber terrorists."

I am tickled...

Oh Oh, now I got the picture.Tell me what happened to citizen fm and other media outlets in the Gambia the likes of Independant ect.If Jammeh can hijack all freedom of speech outlets so as to put vast majority of our citizenry who are not western educated in total ignorance of his robberies, we on the web would not spare him.We shall continue to strip him nacked until he realise the true nature of Gambians. We are a small nation in size but very mighty in brain and this is a fact. All stones will be moved to tackle Jammeh's robbery.
