Well, if I may throw in a few things. Peter, the younger of the two brothers was my classmate for seven years, from Form one to Upper six, while Edward was a year ahead of us. They had a sister going to St. Joseph's then.
They were average students, not rich by any standard, and more on the quiet side. Jawara's kids, Modou and Foday were also our contemporaries, Foday in our class, while Modou was in Edward's group.Edward, if I recall used to befriend Jawara's older kid, Modou. There were rumours that Jawara and some associates in the government helped with the Singhateh brothers' school fees then. I have no independent verification of this though. They later joined the army together as cadets, I believe following a family tradition of military service.
From these years Edawrd and Peter were likeable people, polite, quiet and very disciplined.
However, following the military coup of 1994, these brothers began to enjoy some prominence in both the Gambian military and civil society. These could be due more to their loyalty to each other as brothers in the army, their relatively good education in a military teeming with secondary fourth graduates, as well as their British connection (which the junta might think could help build relations abroad)than their 'brown' skin.
Edward had potential to be brutal and oppressive. This was evident in his numerous physical assault on innocent people. One of such I have witnessed was in the St. Augustine's High school hall . He came to the school amid high security when i was teaching there to give a motivational speech to encourage students to join the army after graduation. After the speech, on his way out he assaulted Mr. Sabally , his one time P.E. teacher, by knocking him down on the floor. Edward did this apparently for misgivings he was harboring from his student days at the school.
On April 10, 2000 soldiers were also sent to Saint's . They shot life bullets at students and teachers wounding many students and again physically assaulted Mr. Sabally. I wasn't at this event but learned it from reliable sources.
The two brothers, together with Yankuba Touray were also widely believed to be connected to the killing of Koro Ceesay, a one time AFPRC finance minister.
But perhaps it is not just the Singhateh brothers, this same behavior might be true of many people in similar situations and circumstances. This is perhaps why we must strife for the RULE OF LAW and TRUE SEPARATION OF POWERS in the governement, so that no individual become too powerful to do these kinds of things...

I have a feeling that i know you like my right hand. I was teaching around this time and i could be your former teacher. You need to send the HADIYA as they say in the Gambia. I am proud that you have made it. Thats what a teacher gets proud of.

Key. May i also aid a little bit about Edward?
i knows him too in later 80/90s as well as his now wife Aja S. while she was moving with my cousin, yes, mi sabi em.(Na man wit slow in moof bat fasta in mind laki echo-sound )while Idi leaft,Yes this was the words from the old man we called Kandemah (as my cousin translated it to me while that time i doesn't speak a Mandingo).the man was staying at S.jack street in Banjul maybe some of you knows him. people count him as insane person but when he has his good time yes one can go with him in very long fine conversations .some time i and Idi. like the Nigerians tailor near by use to call him, there where we use to meet some time and some of the time with that wiser old man.
Yes the man can tells a lot for the future and that day he said some about Idi which is true today including éclat. If Idi read this thread am sure he will remmbers him/it.
Yes Idi was very constructive and humble person, it is just unbelievable how man can turns to a Munster. i don't know if Idi is so but according to your saying, its just incredible and sadly.
I also rembers Dalton, rising topic about him in 2005.
May Allah serve us from evil.
