Gambia/Iran Agreement Ratified By Bubacarr K. Sowe
The National Assembly ratified the Reciprocal Promotion and Protection of Investments between the Gambia and Iranian governments on Tuesday December 4. Abdou Kolley, the Secretary of State for Trade, Industry and Employment, said the Gambia and Iran signed a Memorandum Of Understanding on Economic, Trade, Investment and Technical Cooperation in Banjul July 1, 2006. Mr. Colley, in tabling the Agreement, said that the Reciprocal Promotion and Protection of Investments Agreement was signed during the fourth joint ministerial commission held in Tehran in June 2007. Adama Cham the member for Kombo North said the agreement is for the mutual benefit of the two countries and that it will foster proper utilization of economic resources, job creation and potential investment. The majority leader and member for Serrekunda West, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, said it is a timely agreement aimed at promoting favourable investment conditions.

What do you mean?
May I add the information from CIA on iran foreign trade partners.
Imports - partners: Germany 12%, China 10.5%, UAE 9.4%, France 5.6%, Italy 5.4%, South Korea 5.4%, Russia 4.5% (2006)
Exports - partners: Japan 14%, China 12.8%, Turkey 7.2%, Italy 6.3%, South Korea 6%, Netherlands 4.6% (2006) |
diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.
Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

any african country that does business with Iran is marked, you figure it out, if the suporting nations/organisations want to support a country the first thing the look at is politics/finances and human rights. the UN, EU, WTO have a vested interest in any African country. When these countries apply for aid it ALWAYS COMES with strings attached/conditions. If Iran who is not flavour of the year at the moment becomes an economic investor in an African country do not think that these Western leaders are not looking. THINK ABOUT THE BIGGER PICTURE. Gambia could become alienated by making friends with countries that are not consider "FRIENDLY",. If you were in power and wanted control what would you do. GAMBIA is of course free to choose who and what they want to do, but the knock effects down the line could be catastrophic.

Jambo, Why should we label a country for an experience we have not hard with them? Sometimes we follow the west and forget our intrest. The west does follow their intrest and forget us. I think Gambia has the right to colaborate with any country they wish. This is why Senegal is far ahead Gambia in many ways. I suggest we look at the intrest of the country and not the Us or Eu. If you look arround the world these people colaborate with others for the intrest of their people and country, and secondly they are more developed and many other countries are dependant on them. It is because of the dependancy that they would not let Africa to develop. George Bush and his allies want to wage war against Iran for haveing military nuclear program when the CIA said Iran does not possess it. Can you imagine what the problem is here? They can bring the knowhow and teach us so that we can do things for ourselves. This is what we should demand in my opinion. |

okay, this is what i believe, gambia can make friends with who ever they like, because they are a free country, but if you make friends with one country you make an enemy of another. ie join with iran, enemy of usa, it just seems weird that gambia is going down one road, while looking to UN/EU for loans and other assistance. As this affects the country i would hope the leader would tread carefully.
