Dear Colleagues, i used to sit around on a twilit, quiet, late November day and gaze dreamily at the snow outside the window, or the black ice on the roads or the milk that rose up and burst through the red foil bottle-tops on the milk bottles delivered to us by those infuriatingly slow milk-karts. On this twilit day, a month before Xmas, it is 9 degrees and the heating in my house seems to be superfluous where once it would have been a vital necessity. Upon consideration, i reviewed my memory banks for the last freezing winter, old-style, and cannot remember one past my early teens. Some snow. some years. some serious ice, some years - but no more frozen ponds that we swam in during summer. No more blackbirds pecking at those risen bottle tops. No more white xmases.
Global warming? Greenhouse gasses? Climate change? Well, truth is most of us observe these discussions from the corner of our eyes while we get on with our size 11 carbon footprint lives. Sure, we recycle our newspapers and we used unleaded fuel and we occasionally hit the bottle banks.
Last night i saw an amazing piece of factual evidence.
Bear with me, folks.
So here is the theory. The permafrost in Siberia - which is 10 times the size of the USA, or suchlike, is a frozen mass of plant structure. Carbon Dioxide, causing global warming, melts the permafrost. The plants sink into the lakes below and rot, fermenting into methane gas. Methane gas is 23x more global warming than carbon dioxide. If this methane is released, the global warming would accelerate at a fast and furious rate, thawing more permafrost, releasing more plants, fermenting into more methane etc etc. And the permafrost is shrinking fast!
Cue a Canadian lady scientist , who donned her fake seal fur booties and headed out onto a huge frozen Siberian Lake, surrounded by permafrosted plants etc.
She cleared the snow to the ice level and then emptied her thermos of hot water onto the metre thick iced lake surface.Under the ice were clearly visible bubbles - loads of them.
She then dug into the ice and lit a match.
WHOOOOOOOF!!!!!!!! massive jets of flames, smaller jets of ignited gas and all sorts of fireworks. This was repeated all over the lake surface. This methane is being produced by fermentation of the permafrost in response to carbon-based gaseous greenhouse gases causing global warming. end of story. wake up, smell the coffee, the toast, the full English breakfast, and lunch and supper.
It may even be true!

i'm glad that Climate Change is surfacing as an issue in the bantaba this week. so what is the Bantaba's carbon footprint??
to reduce our Size 11 impact, every bantaba member that comes to the gambia should plant a tree on every visit as a counter measure? |
