Here is a article from the Point news paper!!

The Commissioner’s and the Regional Education offices in Basse have ordered the closure of nine schools in the provincial town and satellite villages.
The schools closed till further notice include Koba Kunda Lower Basic, St. Joseph’s and St. George’s Lower Basic Schools, Nasir Senior Secondary, St. Culbert and St. Albert Nursery schools and Basse Skills Centre.
According to reports, the decision to temporarily close the aforementioned schools came after over 80 pupils in the schools fainted in the afternoons of Monday and Tuesday earlier this week.
Following this development, parents in Basse held their children back for fear of the unknown, our URD correspondent reported yesterday.
He said many parents are now reluctant to allow their children to return to classrooms for the end of this term with some demanding the permanent closure of St. Joseph’s and St. Mulumba’s schools and Basse Skills Centre where the problem reportedly emanated.
Meanwhile, 15 female students from Nasir Ahmadiya Muslim Senior Secondary School were returned to Basse Health Centre where they were admitted after fainting. Our correspondent says the conditions of those affected were yet to improve at the time of going to press.
Basse will today slaughter a cow as charity.

BornAfrican:
i get frustrated about our typical nature of not facing the reality most of the times. what good can we do for 80 poor pupils by sacrificing a cow? gambians sometimes live in real dreamland. this is a typical gambian nature. instead health authorities storm the schools and find out the cause of the problem, i am sure they will now be putting blames on "buwaas/domas" (i.e evil spirits). the comissioner has closed the schools, that is a good thing, but what should follow it is a thorough medical investigation. the affected schools have to produce the health and safety measures they have been applying since they opened. oops!!, i said health and safety, thats nothing of importance in the Gambia, unfortunately. our authorities play with our lives blatantly. they know they won't be brought to book for it, because while they are doing their evils, abusing their offices and neglecting their duties, the ignorant society will be out there blaming artificial disasters on evil spirits.
i know its mans nature that when he is confronted with something he can't comprehend, he turns to a higher power. unfortunately, most of those things happening in the gambia are no mystries. there are out right solutions to them, but because we are not realistic, we would rather shift blames on entities that don't even exist. i have seen in the gambia where someone goes mad and his relatives blame it on someone for casting an evil spell on him. someone gets sick and dies, without even taking him to hospital for a diagnosis, they will either blame it on evil spirits or someone ("has job him" a common gambian term) has casted spell on him.
recently, women have been dying during labor in most of our hospitals, but rather than investigating the doctors/nurses who were taking care of them, we just blame it on god. i know god is responsible, but once an old man said to me: "even god does not want to be blamed, thats why he does not strike us with his hands to death, instead he makes us sick and we die from our sicknesses".

those schools have to remain closed and properly investigated before children are sent back to the classrooms

Sometimes i wonder if we have faith. We look for an easy escape route to our problems. Cheap isnt it. What did these schools have in common. There must be something they shared to cause the fainting since non students in the area are not being affected. I hope it has nothing to do with school supplies through the World Food Programme. I can only see this as the only connection. The epidemiology unit at the health dept should look into this

Unfortunate, Is'nt it? We all know that we do not have a government in the country. One person cannot constitute a government, not ideal. No government, no structure. Therefore when an emergency arises, there will never be a strategy to investigate and correct the situation.

the hard and sad part about this is we can't do anything. unlike a real democracy where the people and voice their displeasure and officials respond, voicing your displeasure might get you killed or harmed, or at best ignored. it is so frustrating cause we can have a rally, a letter campaign, publicity, and jammeh's behind would not care. thats why i feel for our people back home because if us, we in the dispora, with more money and education, feel powerless, then they probably feel worst. at least we're out of the clutches of jammeh and his fat paws.

u got it very right my friend. we are so confused out there. one attribute of a lazy person is blaming others for his/her failure. its very cheap but very costly.

BornAfrican:
Please kondorong, that logic sounds like nuclear science to the people out there. thats why they turned to sacrificing a cow.

Kondorong:
I hope it has nothing to do with school supplies through the World Food Programme. I can only see this as the only connection.

BornAfrican:
Kondorong, this is a very smart point. for a very long time, our authorities have always trusted anything that comes from the West. we have seen western medical students coming to The Gambia and innoculating us with stuff we don't know nothing about. our governments never vet them and their innoculations, simply because they are from the West, they are right. MRC has been on a killing rampage in the Gambia for a very long time, no one has come to his/her senses yet, to see that we are nothing else, but Guinea pigs.
i remember how people ate cracked wheat (a pig food} at schools. school children were fed with fat and the West didn't have to do much work to convince us to comsume raw fat. they only called it "edible fat" and our health authorities gleed with joy, hallelujah!! here comes the Manna. go to schools and see a children stuffed to the throat with edible fat. by 1 o'clock in the afternoon when the sun is hot and the edible fat starts its work, pupils never hear what their teachers say. they are busy sleeping. eyes open, but brains sleeping. no wonder most of us failed so many exams and we were classified as stupid.

Kondorong:
The epidemiology unit at the health dept should look into this.

BornAfrican:
i only hope they are smart enough not to rule out a connection with those schools' food aid. We believe the Daddy White man too much, especially in the Gambia.

Born African you are very funny. It is just a wild guess. I cannot find the reason for it other than something to do with school. have these students been part of the Pneumococcal Vaccine trials being conducted by MRC in Basse. It is the largest research project of MRC and is based in Basse. Just guessing and hope some one in high office is listening.

I get scared somettimes as to how much i have changed. It is scary to realise it. You cannot help it sometimes and we need people to speak their mind.

Good God, this sounds like the Constant Gardener. i once read in a Japanese paper that they came up with a rice infused with human genes; but they're not sure what effects it might have. and then literally a few days later, i read that the japanese have just sent a bunch of rice to Gambia. and of course, jammeh's silly behind was like "the japanese are our friend". i was stunned, it was too much of a coincident for me. i emailed the gambian newspaper about it but no one ever replied. so i really don't know (nobody knows but the japanese) what type of rice that was.

I fear that after the incidents in UK last week, Africa will see a lot more human experiments. STAY ALERT!

Some people are in intensive care after being given doses of a new drug as part of a trial. The only person who is not in hospital was the one on the placebo. I hope the trials are not transferred to some other African country.

6 men became severely ill and almost died after a medicament testing at Northwick Park Hospital/London. It was really a very bad thing. But as we all know, any time our governments (European or US) impose restrictions on the big companies in order to protect their citizens (which may follow now), poorer countries have to pay for it.
