Culled from Freedomnewspaper
Waa Juwara is the New Brikama Area Council Chairman
Lamin Waa Juwara leader of the opposition NDAM, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Brikama Area Council, the Freedom Newspaper can reveal. Mr.Juwara a one time arch critic of President Jammeh replaces the sacked Council Chairman Ousman Gaye. Juwara’s move to accept the said appointment shocked his colleagues in the opposition and party supporters. All indications suggest that Juwara is now full time APRC. His NDAM party is yet to issue a statement on the said appointment.
Few days before his appointment, Mr.Juwara was approached by the Freedom Newspaper for an interview, but the politician declined the request. Juwara who used to lobby for press interviews was for the first time to turn down an interview request from the Freedom Newspaper" I'm not granting any interviews right now. Lets wait till later. For now, no interviews." Juwara told this reporter. Juwara was asked if he could comment on the current political situation in The Gambia, the ailing economy, his association with the APRC, the sale of GAMTEL among other things, but the Niamina Dankunku lion, now turned grass eater declined to comment. Juwara says granting interviews in the short term was a forgotten conclusion. " I cannot grant you interview today. I just can't. I'm sorry." Juwara said.
The unsuspecting Freedom Newspaper reporter told Juwara" I respect your decision not to talk to us at this time. I hope you will find time to talk to us in days to come." Juwara remarked" Try me later. For now, no interviews."
Months of speculations of Juwara joining the APRC has been laid to rest. Juwara is not only the Chairman of the Brikama Area Council, he is also an official of the Ruling APRC. He was recently invited by the President to help revive the Ruling APRC according to sources reaching this paper. Widely known as Mbarodi, Juwara who served as Commissioner in almost all the Divisions in The Gambia during the First Republic was quoted as saying that The Gambian leader is action oriented and should be given the necessary support to develop the Gambia.
Our Correspondent Modou Bojang says opposition leaders across the country were greeted by shock and disbelief about Juwara's sudden change of heart. " This is not the Juwara who calls Jammeh a killer, a thief, a tribalist and all what not. People can change over night. This is no longer a rumor. Juwara has indeed minces his words. He has joined the APRC." said a political commentator.
Political observers are questioning the constitutionality of Juwara's appointment. They say such positions can only be legitimate if the occupants are voted in a free and fair elections. But last week, the National Assembly passed a bill empowering President Jammeh to be incharge of Area Councils and othe local municipalities. Jammeh is apparently testing his new powers by appointing Juwara as Chairman.

This is not a suprise to me at all. The recent interview with Freedom Newspaper showed some conflicting signals.
I guess its the adage" If you cant beat them join them". But then why attempt to beat them when you very well know that your convictions are not strong enough to see you through your goals.
He perhaps has the ability to forgive given what he went through. The world saw it. Well, he who feels it knows it.
NDAM will disapper just like NCP and PPP. Unfortunately, our parties revolve around one individual and i am not aware of any potential successor to WAA in case he retires from politics.
I dont believe in suprises. A suprise is simply an inability to decode signs. It was writen all over. |

From the horse's mouth. The story is now confirmed. See Thepoint below;
Lamin Waa Juwara Appointed Interim Chairman of BAC Tuesday 6th November 2007
By Abba A.S. Gibba
In what is likely to be seen as an interesting development by many keen followers of Gambian politics, President Jammeh has appointed Mr. Lamin Waa Juwara, leader of National Democratic Action Movement (NDAM) renowned for his vociferous opposition to President Jammeh and the APRC administration, as interim Chairman of Brikama Area Council (BAC), this paper can reveal.
Mr. Juwara was appointed on Thursday, in accordance with the provision of the recently amended Local Government Act providing for the president to dissolve and then set up interim management teams 90 days prior to the local government elections.
When contacted, Mr. Juwara confirmed the story and said: “Really it is surprise to me, but I think it is a step in the right direction. The fact that President Jammeh has appointed me to the interim management committee of BAC, he has scored a big political point. It confirms that he doesn’t see everything from a partisan angle and that is going well for a small society like The Gambia.
“I am on record to have said that the last elections were free and fair and has given him political legitimacy. We must analyse everything objectively, praise where praise is due, and criticise where criticism is due with all one objective, and that is the betterment of The Gambia.”
Reflecting on his eligibility for the position, the once fiery opposition politician said: “With my experience and long association with the local authorities, I think the nomination is in the right direction despite the short duration. But I very much appreciate it and I will sell through the chairman and the other members of the committee, that despite being an interim committee, that we should focus on environmental issues. I think the monthly ‘Set Setal’ has noble objectives and anti littering laws are also in the right direction, but the primary agency that should enforce these laws are the local authorities, and I hereby say they have failed in that direction because the people have not been sensitised and implementation has not been planned. And this is one objective we can achieve during the life span of the interim period. The incoming local government administration will have no alternative but to continue the project.”
Mr. Juwara emphasised his concern for environmental issues and expressed the belief that “the president is equally concerned” as, he noted, is evidenced by his dogged enforcement of the monthly ‘Set Setal.’ He however deplored the fact that the exercise has not been achieving the desired impact because the planning at the local level is almost non-existent in all the major youth centres across the country. “This is a national issue and non partisan,” he concluded.

Well like the mandinkas say: NING BORO MANG MEY, KOMA TOO LAA BUKA LONG. (Unless the race last longer, we will never know the ones to come last).
But again, the wolofs say FATAM TAPP, DU TAGALEH MBAM AK NOPAM (The violent shaking of a donkeys head, does not seperate its ears from the body). You can never run awaya from yourself. |

My learned friend Kondorong should not be surprise with such a twist from one of our most popular policians for good or for bad.
History and recent trends in Gambian politics since the APRC came into power teaches us that Politicians are often cross carpeting from one opportunity to another.
This is particularly true for those former PPP members who are still struggling to find their political identity since they were abandoned by their leader Sir Dawda. If I read the reports right, Gibou Jangn former NCP is also part of the KMC committee.
What is the difference between Sir Dawda, BB Darboe, SM Dibba, Lamin Kiti Jabang, Buba Baldeh and many others joining APRC from Waa Juwara joining the van wagon? Would anyone tell me the principal difference please? SM was a head of a political party so is Waa and Jawara yet they all abandoned their parties.
I am not in anyway defending the actions of WAA Juwara who has proven over and over that he is a political opportunist dating back to PPP.
My take is that if you are into politics for positions of power and popularity, and can't determine what you really stand for, then this is what end up happening. They all reduce themselves to the lowest and cheapest political opportunism we ever witness.
What a political lesson for our younger generation??? Choi Aduna... there are dead people walking alive...

While Waa Juwara's decision to accept a governement post with Jammeh and the APRC may be remotely considered politically immoral, there are many instances where opposition politicians have done the same thing without compromising their basic political and philosophical principles. The closest example would be Wade of Senagal who worked with Abdou Joof , then president while Wade remained an opposition leader. In the U.S. also many Democrats have served under Republican presidents and vice versa. Holding a political office can be a service to a nation and not just a service to a party. The future will tell whether Mbarodi secedes to the APRC or uphold his opposition status. Certainly not all politicians are like the PDOIS trio who could resist the lure of political office in defence of principles and ideology. Like Kondorong said , there are no suprises in Mbarodi's change of heart. The impasse and final collapse of NADD apparently changed Mbarodi as evident in his controversial support of the APRC Nyamina candidate in the past national assembly elections. Many will be tempted to recant Mbarodi as Marlowe's Dr. Faustus who sold his soul to the devil for a short period of aggrandisement. However, I can only congratulate Waa for his courage and willingness to serve his country when called upon to do so. It is his right to associate and dis-associate, and we need to respect that right of his without malice. Democracy requires us to do just that. |

If memory serves me well, Waa was kept for 18months in early days of the coup d'tat; tortured and humiliated.
later on, charged with treason, he served 6 months.
In my opinion, i won't hold any blame on his sympathisers and supporters, but i am of the view that he betrayed principle. I am of the view that he is acting alone. Lets see how things unfold for him. lets see 3-4 months from now?
Now, what's his fate?
They will use him, and trash him later like was done with Dr. Taal.
But also keeping in mind, Waa needs a job. He needs to take care of his family and friends. In that regard, congrats with a caution.
