College Students Say “Yes” To Unity
Constitution For A Single Union Adopted
By Gibairu Janneh

The Gambia College main students’ union Saturday concluded a two day constitutional review meeting aimed at harmonising all the students sub unions into a single union at the Brikama Campus. Participants were drawn from all the four schools of the college, namely, the school of education, the school of nursing, the school of public and environmental health and school of agriculture.

In his opening speech the Registrar and Vice Principal of the college told the students that the greater pleasure that school administrations enjoy is the disunity of students. He said that all over the world, in colleges and universities, irrespective of the population of the students they always come together under one union in their cause to fight for the welfare of the students. He noted that during his days as a student of The Gambia they exhausted all efforts in trying to dismantle the so-called sub unions and build a single solid union that will represent the interest of the entire students but things never materialized. He advised the students to adopt the draft constitution that will unite them and forget about their differences. He said they would be able to influence the decisions of the administration and hence achieve student welfare.
Delivering a short speech to the participants the president of the National Union of Gambia Students (NUGS) Mr. Ebrima Sanneh also told participants that the students of The Gambia College have long been divided and as students of a younger generation the time is due for than to unite. He said it is only when the students are united under one strong umbrella with the objective of collective responsibility that they can successfully advocate for their needs. He added that it is for this reason the NUGS joined efforts with the college’s main union to ensure that students defeat the idea of balkanization and move forward towards the achievement of the common good. He concluded that unity is the only solution that will enable the students achieve their aims not only for the college but The Gambian student at large. The meeting divided the participants into four groups to review the constitution and in the process clauses that were deemed unnecessary were removed and new provisions were included. When the motion was first moved as to whether to adopt or reject the constitution all the three schools adopted the constitution except the school of nursing. They claimed that they will only adopt the constitution if the portfolio of health minister is allocated to their school, otherwise they are totally against the harmonization process. The presidents of the three sub unions however came to a consensus and public and environmental health surrendered the portfolio of health minister to the school of nursing.
