Good afternoon, colleagues. The final posting by Turk regarding Benazir Bhutto brings an exasperated Lurker to ask this question of you erudite contributors. Most people seem to concur that the love of money is the root of all evil, especially when it comes to politics. My proposal for your consideration is.....
Is there a politician who is not corrupt?
Can someone tell me who they believe has been a true and honest politician who has represented his/her people, never dipped his/her hand in the till or abused his /her power, campaigned on a platform of sincerity, integrity and truth, refrained from lying for gain, kept promises, honoured commitments, stood by professed principles, not courted the press,won/lost gracefully and truly been HONEST!! ?
Alas i fear that most of us fear that this is an impossibility - yet we all vote for them..a conundrum.

| I donīt think it is possible for any politician to be not corrupt in a sense it is outline by lurker. Politics is all about politics being tactical, realistic, practical. When it comes to voting, many politicians have to abandon their own beliefs and fall into line with the party instead of being true to him/herself. |

Former turkish primeminister and leftist politician Bulent Ecevit. He was married with no kids. He had a apartment from their saving from the profession politics. The apartment was on the street where mostly intellectuals live. No other property. Also, they had a car, Renault, like 20 years old.
They say, iranian president Ahmedinejat is not corrupt either. He is very modest, he has a car, peugeot which is 10-20 years old. He also have a few properties. Despite he hold offices like Presidency, Mayor of Tahran and dean of a university.
There are some good politicians who are not corrupt. But they are minority.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices. |

why lurker?
...............Ahmadinejad, the son of a blacksmith, was born in Garmsar, near Tehran on October 28, 1956. In 1976, he took Iran's national university entrance exams (konkoor) to gain admission into Iran's top universities. His test score ranked him 132nd among over 400,000 participants that year,[18] landing him at the Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST) as an undergraduate student of civil engineering. Even after being elected President, Ahmadinejad continued living in a simple apartment flat and eating meals brought from home, in his office........

what do you think an iranian president earns? yet you say he has "a few properties".maybe he has a rich wife or daddy? and, by the way, i have not, personally, perceived his manner to include modesty.far from it. he is outspoken, bombastic and an idealogue.. not modest, i would suggest. |

Lurker. You are confusing me. His modesty is well documented on the article and how he appears. He looks like ordinary citizen the way he dressed up. He brings food to work. This is a president we are talking about. He drives 1980s peugeot living in his flat/apartment.
Why do you think he is not modest? His being outspoken for his country and being ideologue has nothing to do with his modesty or honest man. I think you have prejudice about him and biased. You may not agree with his ideology or his political style, but you failed to bring any evidence and supporting arguement that he is not modest.
