The earliest known recorded contact with the outside world was in 470BC nearly 2476 years to this day. The Carthagians have recorded history of this encounter by their leader called Hannon. To understand the history of the Gambia is to appreciate the River we are blessed with. Just like the Nile was Egypt and Egypt was the Nile so was the River gambia.

I am very much interested in history. I was interested in the source of the information pertaining to the contact made by Hannon and the Gambia in 470BC. Thank you for assisting in this matter.

Gate keeper this is a lik to one of the many sources

http://www.niica.on.ca/gambia/History.aspx

The details are very shallow but it did take place. infact the one from the Liberia Times makes detailed history of the mandingos. I am however, suprised that there was a Niani empire in Ivory Coast. Is is possible that this niani extended to gambia or was the Niani in the Gambia named after the Niani in Ivory coast is worth finding out. may be descendants from the Niani in Ivory coast settled in the gambia.

The intersting thing is that many gambians have travelled to Ivory coast for trade. Were they following in the long traditions of years past is certainly not clear. History is as complex as complex itself.
