Sierra Leone: Opposition Takes Power

17 September 2007
Posted to the web 17 September 2007

Sierra Leone's opposition All People's Congress (APC) has taken power by
winning both presidential and parliamentary elections.

National Electoral Commission officials have confirmed that the APC's
candidate, Ernest Bai Koroma, has prevailed in the country's presidential
election, agencies reported today.

Reports from the BBC and Reuters quoted the commission as saying Koroma had
won 54.6 percent of the vote, against Vice-President Solomon Berewa's 45.4
percent.

The APC won the parliamentary election last month. Koroma received the
highest number of votes in the first round of presidential balloting, but
not enough to secure election in one round. He and Berewa, the candidate of
the ruling Sierra Leone People's Party, faced off in a second round on
September 8.

Berewa was the chosen successor of President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah, who is
stepping down after serving the maximum two terms as head of state. He went
into the race the favourite.

Koroma has never held elective office. He was resoundingly beaten by Kabbah
in the last election in 2002. However, he is seen by observers as having
benefited from the government's failure to deliver social services. The APC
made substantial gains in local government elections in 2004.

I do not oppose unity but I oppose dumb union.

Hope it happen in the motherland but Gambian opposition has no prospects of winning for many many years to come.

The Electoral system does not favour them. IEC not independent. Lack of COMMON political strategy, lack of focus, dis-orientations, good advocacy programs, greed, power hungry, aggressive competition & under-mining of efforts between them, mobilisation of resources, no strong political organs, unite and net-working amongst others are CONSTRAINTS.

They have along wait and most probably after Jammeh has achieved OIL, VISION 2020 AND SILCON VALLEY.

On party politics what are the Gambian opposition parties doing apart from PDOIS on civic education and consistent vocal advocacy programmes Any other opposition parties showing any signs of progress They appear to be TOTALLY DORMANT! I can tell thats my verdict in terms of the BALLOT BOX! I always re-iterate there is nothing coherent STRATEGICALLY & TACTICALLY! Egoes are the problems on both sides of LEADERSHIPS AND STALWART SUPPORTERS respectively. How can they change the system Why are you optimistic Tell me what signs of progress do you see to be hopeful in the nearest foreseable future

Do you want us to trust "wait and see approach!" or for MIRACLES TO HAPPEN!; without BALLOT BOX Come on be serious with your hopes or optimism! Don't bank on recent crumbling of APRC, self-inflicted wounds and slaughter of a lame duck!

Those comments and verdict are to challenge us (ALL PATRIOTS!) to live up-to expectations with Gambian politics.

Lets take the bull by its horns as demonstrated by Sierra Leone Why can't our opposition parties mobilised mass support for SUCCESS through the BALLOT BOX

kobo ,yeh the topics are similar but i want us to deal the gambian brain box behind our lay back attitude to national affairs. you commit a crime by associating your gambian business with my sierra leonian business .after our war ,still we understand democracy more than you .remember we have our forabe university before the gambia dream of one .that may have role to play as well.
