Its very serious to consider this a political trick! It may be a similar drama as was with Yanks but the damage, isolation and breach of trust has already been done.
Lets follow developments further as Gambian politics appear to be a dangerous game and full of surprises! |

I'm also not convinced that this is a real sacking. I tend to agree with Pappa that it could be a "political trick" Because it looks similar to what we witnessed happen in the case of Yankuba Touray. I maybe wrong but before it is confirmed to be real, I stand unconvinced and sceptical that it could just be another political joke.

Daily observer reoprts Singhateh relieved Kotu Cham takes Environment under http://www.observer.gm/enews/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8946&Itemid=1
Is it his study leave for the Law program enrolled according to reports This report is more revealing as under quotes:
"His Excellency the President of the Republic of The Gambia Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh in exercise of the powers vested in him under Section 71 (4)b of the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia has relieved Mr Edward Singhateh of his Cabinet appointment with effect from the 13th September, 2007. Mr Singhateh is also being relieved of his position as General Secretary of the APRC"
Take note of being outstripped General Secretary of the APRC! For political pundits that can trigger lots of speculations Anyway lets follow developments! Time will tell where they are heading to! |

Well , over the weekend a friend in Scandenavia (Norway actually) informed me that he read in the Echo about the sacking of E.Singhateh , but i was skeptical until I read it in the Point or Foroyaa. It is good that Edward leaves , not because he is a good guy, I think Edward is very terrible considering the human rights abuses he 's been implicated in; but his departure further rids the government of one more soldier. Jammeh needs to continue on to return power into the hands of the civilians by leaving office himself together with the rest of the military in the government. It is also interesting that Edward is enroling for a law degree. The law professors should refuse to teach him like what happened to Sierra Leone's Valentine Strasser at Warwich college in U.K. Also the Gambia Bar Association should not admit Edward into their rank because of his character and human rights record. In many places , including the U.S. admission into the bar and acquiring a license to practice law requires not only passing a written exam but also a proof of high moral and good character. For example a felon or someone who is known to have flagrantly violated human rights of others by way of torture and murder may not be admitted to the American Bar Association (ABA). Is he going to be Jammeh's lawyer when we are trying him ...? |

Ramadan mubarak to all. I have been out for a while but remained an active reader of Bantaba.
I had a new addition to my family, a beautiful baby girl so was busy taking care of mom and baby...
Great exchanges as usual on Bantaba. I enjoy the debates and I couldn't wait to be back. Fasten your sleeves for political stuff....
Am back and off course Halifa will be well represented here with all fairness. No castigation without justification.
As for Edward's sacking, we all knew there has been bad blood between Jammeh and Edu. The distrust continued to grow especially with Peter in the army.
It was only a matter of time before Jammeh will part with these folks and this is probably why Edu always played a low profile and therefore was the longest serving secretary of state.
When the end is near, anything is possible... all the branches has fallen off and the tree is bare nicked... Time will tell...

| Wecome Dbaldeh. what do you guys think should be the fate of Edward Singhateh , now that he has stepped out of executive immunity? Will he go scott free , and subsequently will Jammeh get away with all he has done? Should the law professors , students and the Bar Association accept Edward considering his human rights record as an AFPRC key player vis avis koro Ceesay and others...? |

As the saying goes ' give the devil his due'. In that respect I would like to say he used to give us lift in his official car when I was at Gambia High School.
This is just to balance things here. It doesn't mean anything.
Thanks |

You deserve more than a lift in Edu's car. That car belongs to you and every Gambian. I do not see any good in getting what is rightly yours. Its not a favour he was doing for you. In fact by giving you a lift and not giving me a lift, i feel discriminated against. Public officials cannot and should not pick and choose who they will shower crumbs. They should represent the public good.
If they had done a good job, you would not have been standing on the roadside hoping and praying to God that you are given a lift in a publicly financed car.
The best Edu could do is to ensure that school buses are available to ferry students. This issue of patronage where officials can choose to practice virtue if they so wish is the greatest disease in public policy in Africa.
We should work around systems and not individuals because it only leads to praise singings and tipping one official against the other.
I am watching and trying to see where we are going. Too busy these days. Bye |
