The Point Newspaper carried this piece, what do you think,is the US interferring quietly in Gambia affairs ,if so is that good or not should such comments be made by the president alone in that he directs the military

I can find no write up in the Daily Observer Newspaper
(which is now back on line!!)

In diplomatic politics, organising and sponsoring such seminars is an indication of displeasure in the way the military is performing.

Diplomacy is about being able to tell to someone to go to hell and he looks forward to it. Its a science to be mastered.

“When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.”

The good question to ask is: Where is all that coming from? What makes it a felt-need to harmonise the Gambia Army and societal relations? There is more to this than what we see on the surface. Diplomacy is a cunning mode of dealing with others. Why is this done now and not earlier in the 13 years of military rule?

You shouldn't really answer a question with a question
"Diplomacy is a cunning mode of dealing with others"......yes.......

I think Tamba's remarks are just the usual boilerplate rhetoric of diplomatic niceties. Do we expect him to say otherwise ? The reality is that the military should not be doing law enforcement (such as manning checkpoints and arresting people), it is not their job. Their job is to defend the nation from external aggression , not policing. The Gambia is not at war , so the military should be pre-occupied with something more important to do than meddling in civil matters. But I do not see any end to the militarization of the Gambia government soon , since the security of Jammeh rests on the military not democratic institutions.

Kay, I understand what you say except for one phrase,

" the usual boilerplate rhetoric of diplomatic niceties"

I like the phrase but I havn't the remotest idea what it means, can you please explain in simple language that a person who is not a politician or diplomat can make sense of.

I mean it is just the usual pattern of nice words (usually rehearsed) typical of politicians and government officials.
Synonyms to boilerplate are template , blueprint , etc. Something that is used over and over. Rhetoric is the effective use of words to generate a desired effect.

This is a common word if you work with documents a lot.For example if you are to write a contract document between two people , you do not have to re-invent the wheel , you can use a standard form (document) and adapt it to the situation. You are funny ...
