http://allafrica.com/stories/200708141017.html Brothers and sister i thing sholarships for education should be issue on acamdemic merit than appearance. As the common saying gose by"don't judge a book by the cover". Presentability should not has noting to do with education. I think may female student will spend less time of there education and spend most of the time making there bodies to look presentable in public. If the aim is to educate our girls why not motive them on say for example easy competition which may improve there writing skill because for the records, most of the result in maths, english and secienc has been getting poorer every year.

Foni, I agree to a certain extent but don't forget that to create these items there has to be tailors and dressmakers and those who sell cloth and those who dye cloth, all this creates work for the tradesmen, and what could look better than a pagent of beautiful people? but it will be the case that the winner will get a scholarship, hence your point about "acamdemic merit" but don't forget there can only be one winner in each catagory. |

toubab1020, As I red through the link it seems that it is not the Gambia government but the APRC. I just do not know how such a selection be made in this way. May be they are not after education. Otherwise it would me according to acamdemic merits. Everybody is very beautiful so there is no ugy one as we have been created without our knowledge or participation. If the jugements for the scholarships are not by acamdemic merit then they scheme will not serv iits purpose. It will surely fail.

By the way, not only should you be asking "do we need to be beautiful to get a scholarship" but also do we need to have sufficient funds in order to comply with the 'dress code',pay for hairdressers, so-called beauty products, etc. This is an elitist scholarship on so many levels!!! It's not often that I'm speechless but ...... words fail me! |

In the shallow skull of Yahya Jammeh, a man who calls himself president and bends the back of Gambians to accept him, life is full of fun and merry making. It is up to Gambians to accept being fooled or to stand against the fool(s) |

I couldn't get the message clearly from the person who posted this article, but all along I have cherished the view point of Karamba. He is a level-headed person. I think Gambia needs many of your type to put back the country on the right footing. Mr., keep it up. |

I donīt know what to say, I am completely stunned.. Who the hell in their right mind would give someone a scholarship just because they are good-looking?? This is the absolute WORST idea I have ever heard. If Jammeh wants to educate gambians then give the scholarships to the smart and bright one not the beautiful ones. What good is in giving a scholarship to someone who can barely read a setence in english just because she is pretty. Maybe its just me, bu that does not make any sense at all. |

Toubab I do not see your point . If Jammeh wants to promote the tailors and so on, he can do it in a different way, this is not right.Someone super smart might miss an opportunity to get a great education and help develop the country just cause she does not have the right look, come on man, be real. This idea is just dumb. |

I agree with you it is dumb, but I am sure those who proposed it did not think for one moment of the economic effects of sales of cloth and workmanship that would come from it. They only thought about the good looks of the girls who would be taking part!! |

| Our sisters deserve better than being paraded around in the guise of offering them scholarships. When we talk about the liberation of women, these are things we ought to fight to eradicate. |

President Yahya Jammeh is the Chief Patron of all Gambian maniacs. Jammeh has a special flavour for women, especially those in the nude and fried skins. Evidence: Before robbing the nation to become head of the military junta, it was said that he chased Tuti Faal, competing other men with greater economic advantage, so they outdid him. When he staged the July coup, he quickly jumped for the opportunity of dating Tuti Faal, and turned her into a member of the socalled club of African First Ladies; headed by Mariam Abacha. Later their marriage suffered a fatal termination. From what those who knew Tuti Faal, she was not the best of good models. Being a FRIED skin, Jammeh thought that was enough. After Tuti The Woman is gone, Jammeh was still in search of fried skins. He openly attacked skin bleaching in many of his public utterances. Next he pegged his eyes on lilly Zainab Shuma a cross breed of Guinean Susu and Moroccan Moore. She too a fried banana skin. Jammeh organises wrestling contests for near nude ladies and can be seen grinning when a woman's bare body is flung to the ground by another half-naked contestant. The same president Yahya Jammeh to organise a beauty contest for the nation's female students is only an extension of his nymphomaniac manners. That is the truth. Can anyone deny this? |

Another move for the so called sugar daddies. Sisters please watch out. Ref. to Mansasulu's point you all deserve better than this, we need more educated women in the Gambia but this is not the best initiative at all. Beautify + Glamour = Scholarship. Seriously, thats not a possitive formula for our women folks struggling for their liberation. Karamba's said it all. The only reason behind all these nonsense is to create an atmosphere exploiting our beautiful queens just to satisfy a very wired desire. I don't get it!!! Few months ago we witnessed (miss black America in the Gambia) they spent millions, no benefit to ordinary folks struggling for their daily bread. Again, that was led by H E. Something fishy here.
