JOURNALIST EBRIMA MANNEH MISSING FOR ONE YEAR
By Bubacarr K. Sowe

The disappearance of journalist ‘Chief’ Ebrima Manneh of the Daily Observer will clock one year tomorrow, July 7.

Mr. Manneh, who went missing on Friday, July 7, 2006 after leaving his home for work has not been seen or heard from since then, family sources told Foroyaa. According to the sources, the reporter was picked up at his office by personnel whose identity has not been revealed, so far, and according to his father, Sarjo Manneh, he has made endless effort but nobody at the Daily Observer has explained to him what went wrong.

The Gambia Press Union (GPU) has expressed shock over the long detention of their colleague.

Madi Ceesay, President of the GPU told Foroyaa that Manneh is the longest detained journalist in The Gambia, so far.

“Manneh is the breadwinner of his family and his sister’s school fees are paid by him.
He said that for the past twelve months they have been making several attempts to find Manneh’s whereabouts.

He also said that the GPU together with the International Federation of Journalist (IFJ) the Committee to Protect Journalist (CPJ), West African Journalists Association (WAJA) and other international bodies are collectively working on the matter.

Very sad and cruel indeed. The old man must be devastated. Chief's elder brother am told was incacerated by this repressive regime for 10yrs for his alledged role in a previous alledged coup.

The oldman is suffering a heartbreak.

In July 1994, Jammeh threatened Gambians that anyone dares stand on the way of his Revolution "will regret why you are born in the first place." It is exactly that threat he is now putting in practice. This was a long made threat and now been acted. If these arrests and long trials were not part of Jammeh's bully, he would have ordered to have them stopped at least to clear his bad name. There is no sign to show any drop in this trend of senselessness.

Detaining an individual for this long without bringing him before the law court is an act of terror that can never be justified. His whereabout is not even known, this is very cruel indeed. It's unbelievable, such acts are committed against citizens by the authorities for no other reason, but to oppress and dictate the entire society. Where is the concept of rule of law? Its a shame, the coward administration uses the innocent victims just to silence voices. The whole society in constant fear of reprisal and cannot even exercise their simple rights to free expression.

These are terrorist activities carried out by the law enforcement agents under the watchful eye of an elected Government and it's camouflage Executive, Legislative and Judiciary bodies all desparate to please just one man. Anyway It's obvious, most of those serving within these institutions are just there for the interest of the dictator who is totally ignorant of the political rights of individual citizens.

"People who shut their eyes to reality simply invite their own destruction, and anyone who insists on remaining in a state of innocence long after that innocence is dead turns himself into a monster" J Baldwin
