FELLOWSHIP IN COMMONWEALTH STUDIES AT CAMBRIDGE
Commonwealth academicians are invited to apply for up to two Smuts Visiting Fellowships in Commonwealth Studies at the Wolfson College, Cambridge University, UK, for the 2007/08 academic year. The applicants should be members of staff of another university or similar institution outside the UK, should hold PhDs or be working at a post-doctoral level.

Fellowships are available for research in Commonwealth Studies, including Commonwealth - related aspects of archaeology, law, literature, oriental studies, sociology, politics and social psychology.

The Fellowship award is £20,000 for a maximum duration of nine months, with an additional sum of up to £5,000 for travel costs, and Fellows will take up their posts in October 2007.

Dr Kate Maxwell, Secretary to the Managers of the Smuts Memorial Fund, said: "The Smuts Visiting Fellowship is open to male and female applicants, and since 1994/95 this scheme has enabled 24 Smuts Visiting Fellows to visit Cambridge to study relevant subjects.

"Preference will be given to scholars with a distinguished research profile, who are nationals or permanent residents of the Commonwealth and who have active research interests in an area or areas of scholarship falling within the remit of the Smuts Fund."

Dr Maxwell stressed that the Fellows are expected to advance Commonwealth Studies in Cambridge by building on existing research or initiating new research on a topic that can be completed within nine months or less. The Fellows are also expected to participate in seminars within the University.

The closing date for applications is 28 August 2006. Successful applicants will be informed in November 2006. Applicants should write to the Secretary, Smuts Memorial Fund, 4 Mill Lane, Cambridge CB2 1RZ, UK, or e-mail kfw20@admin.cam.ac.uk for an application package.
