I can't describe what kind of opposition parties we have. They are not active and appears to be totally dormant apart from one party only that engages government on policy issues, budgets, the economy, education and all issues of politics. Taking this opportunity to thank P.D.O.I.S / N.A.A.D and its organ FOROYAA for keeping us update with events and proper analysis of government programmes and events at home.

Latest on there invaluable time covered some of these topics as follows:
HALIFA SALLAH on the restructuring drive http://www.gambia.dk/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3859

GAMBIANS ABROAD SHOULD BECOME FULLY ENGAGED WITH THE COUNTRY
http://www.gambia.dk/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3857

We haven't heard anything from other parties especially U.D.P; N.R.P, N.D.A.M and G.P.D.P. Are their campaingn organs not working or effective? ARE THEY DEAD?

KEEP US INFORM POLITICALLY AND ADDRESS THE SYSTEM AND POLICIES PLEASE FOR THE GAMBIA OUR HOMELAND!

Kobo,

Good question. Without any regrets in putting it thick, the Opposition in Gambia is closer to death than life. They simply do not have a convincing agenda to sell. Worst of all, some of them simply want the job without being seriously prepared for it. The element of selfishness is no small part of their failure.

You are right Santanfara, most of our politicians are seasonals no doubt about that. Althought some, but very few deserved credit for their oppositions stands. This trend needs changing if we are to be effective against aprc party.

In my opinion, many of them just tiptoe through their political activitis as they fear being badly bruised by the socalled ruling party. Unfortunately, this includes many of us home and abroad. Average Gambian always fear the outcomes they may personally face due to political involvement, be it physical harassment, employment status, or any other social and economic consequences.

What we all really need to remember about our political opposition to Jammeh's or any future regimes is how to be truely commited as a matter of given it all or gaining nothing situation. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained". We need new directions to nuture opposition political parties and activities with a vision, willing to overcome fears and be ready to sincerely invest anything we can afford into it, either personal wealth, experience, intellect or physical support.

If we are no willing for all these, then we have a long way to go even when jammeh and aprc are gone.

"People who shut their eyes to reality simply invite their own destruction, and anyone who insists on remaining in a state of innocence long after that innocence is dead turns himself into a monster" J Baldwin

Political parties in Gambia (including the opposition) have very narrow selfish agenda. Their principal ambition is to hold political office in order to gain access to the economic steering wheel. One reason why opposition paries continue failing is due to their imbalanced selfish agenda. They are much apart within themselves and much the same way they are poles apart with the electorate. This politics of hidden agenda is no recipe for political success. Selfishness all around !!!!!

KARL , you have said it all here . the gambian style phobia ( scared of being harm and loss of job and property ) .yahya has mastered this equation. so he can let rip any how he like with a very minimal opposition.

The Gambia's electoral system is a 'winner-take-all' system. It does not have to be that way. There is nothing wrong with the opposition members working with and holding office posts under the ruling party, while maintaining their opposition status. Waa's acceptance of an appointment under Jammeh does not necessarily make him an APRC pending his declaration of 'carpet crossing'. It could in fact be considered a noble act to be able to put aside past differences for the promotion of national interest. Did Waa declared that he has switched to APRC?
