Dear Sir/Madam,
In the light of the current unfavorable climate for journalists and the free media in our country, the Gambia Press Union, U.S.A Branch has embarked on an aggressive campaign to raise funds to help journalists and media houses currently facing prosecution or likely to face prosecution in The Gambia.
The current campaign was sparked by the recent conviction of Lamin Fatty, a reporter for the now illegally banned Independent newspaper in Banjul. Fatty was convicted after a long kangaroo trial during which he was accused of publishing false information. In spite of the fact that The Independent had retracted the offending story and published an apology to the person concerned (who by the way did not file suit against the paper), Fatty was sentenced to a fine of 50, 000 dalasi (about U.S$1, 850), failure to pay which he was to spend one year in jail. Fortunately, the Gambia Press Union, Banjul, our parent body, was able to raise the funds and so save Fatty from serving jail time.
Last week, the GPU-USA received a letter from GPU-Gambia President Madi Ceesay soliciting funds to offset the costs of paying Fatty’s fine. Moreover, other journalists are also currently facing dubious charges in Gambian courts and there is little doubt that they will be convicted regardless of their guilt or innocence. We are therefore
pre-empting any disastrous eventualities in their cases by trying to raise funds with which to go to her rescue as soon as the need arises.
We are therefore asking you to please help us raise some money by contributing whatever amount you are able to.
