NADD has become the equivalent of the Democratic party of the United States with no clear cut agenda or direction.Jammeh and Co. are the happiest right now to see the oppositions lack of political maturity and consensus.I mean come on,who will vote for people who cant even work together among themselves let alone rule a whole country.The old guard mentality of african politics still hold sway in our countries and until that changes,ruling parties will continue to have a lock on power.The business of replacing Jammeh or any other african despot is bigger than one man or one party.
Meanwhile in addition to the fraud and intimidation during election time,fraud and the rewards system ensure that the ruling party never loses.People are rewarded with bags of rice; workers in pro-government unions get the best pay and conditions; student party members are first in line for scholarships. All this binds people into a blurred entity consisting of the state, the government and the ruling party.A disintegrated and disorganised opposition wont stand a chance here because our ordinary people are not that politically concious to debate political or economic policy.The former regime used the same trick to hold a strangle hold on power for decades and the present one is practicing the same.Politicians use to go to my village and give people rice,kill a cow,make nice to the village elders and they are assured of victory when election comes.There was no way that Jawara would have lost an election if the military had not removed him.The same trend is continuing and until Nadd or any other opposition for that matter learn from this,Jammeh will be there for a long time to come.

THERE WERE FUNDAMENTAL REASONS WHY PPP HAD ALWAYS BEEN WINNING ELECTIONS. BELIEVE,ME, ALTHOUGH IT SOUNDS STUPID, PPP CAME INTO BEING AS A RESULT OF THE PROTECTORATE'S DESIRE TO HAVE A STAKE IN THE EMERGING GAMBIA. IT WAS CALLED THE PROTECTORATE PEOPLES PARTY THEN PEOPLES PROGRESSIVE PARTY.
LATER ON OUR NATIONAL LOGO WAS PPP WHICH MEANS PROGRESS PEACE AND PROSPERITY. PPP THEN BECAME INSTITUTIONALISED WITH THE MACHINNERY OF GOVERNMENT.
THE PEOPLE OF BANJUL THEN BELIEVED IT WAS THEIR RIGHT TO GOVERN AFTER THE COLONIALIST LEFT AND WERE DEADLY AGAIMST PEOPLE FROM THE PROVINCES TAKING OVER AND THIS CUTS ACCROSS TRIBAL LINES. WOLLOFS FROM THE INTERIOR WERE CALLED FANA FANA AND THE SOSSEH BADDIBU. THE BADDIBU BUNKAS WERE THE FIRST WAVE TO COME TO BANJUL FOR A BETTER LIFE AND HENCE WERE VERY UNPOPULAR UP TO THIS DAY.
YOU HAD TO CLAIM YOUR ORIGINS IN BANJUL TO BE ACCEPTED EVEN IN PUBLIC SERVICE. THIS HISTORICAL RIFT IS STILL IN PLACE AND IS PART OF THE PROBLEMS WITH NADD. EVEN FOR THE POSITION OF IMAM IN BANJUL THIS DIVISON PLAYED A PART.
SECONDLY, MOST OF THE PEOPLE ESPECIALLY HOUSE HOLD HEADS SWORE BY THE HOLY BOOK TO VOTE FOR THE PARTY AND IT STARTED IN BRIKAMA(NYAMBAI FOREST). BRIKAMA IS THE IOWA OF THE UNITED STATES AND WHO EVER WANTED TO SUCCEED IN POLITICS HAS TO BE ENDORSED BY THEM. BRIKAMA BROUGHT FORTH PPP, IT LED TO ITS DOWN FALL. REMEMBER THE WATER DEMONSTRATIONS AND THE EVENTS LEADING TO THE COUP IN 1994. THIS GENERATION COULD NOT CHANGE THEIR MINDS FOR FEAR OF THE PUNISHMENT OF BREAKING ONES PROMISE ESPECIALLY IF MADE ON THE HOLY BOOK. JAWARA WAS ALSO NOT ABLE TO PUNISH THE SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF THESE OLD ALLIES FOR FEAR OF BREAKING HIS PROMISE. THE PROCESS OF INACTION THEN BEGAN.
JAWARA HAD TO MARRY IN BANJUL AS A COMPROMISE AND ABSORBED FORMER CONTENDERS LIKE JAHUMPA WHO WAS GIVEN HIGH PUBLIC OFFICE. RELIGION PLAYED ITS ROLE AND JAWARA THEN DAVID MARRIED A CHRISTIAN AND THE MUSLIM MAJORTY WOULD NOT ENDORSE THAT. HE THEN BECAME DAWDA. COMPLEX ISN'T IT.
YAYA LEARNED FROM THE PPP. HE WAS A PRESIDENTIAL GUARD COMMANDER AND HAS TOURED WITH JAWARA. |
