It is Karoningka. It is a subethnic group of the Ajamaat (Jola). Jola is amandinka word meaning "one who take revenge" They are mostly found in the South Bank of the River Gambia, primarily foni's and cassamance in senegal.

...Gambian by birth, Muslim by the grace of Allah...

jambo ,i am not sure if any tribe in the gambia can claim to be a christian tribe or muslim tribe. different tribes choose different religion and in many cases a little bit of mix here and there. the karoninkas aren't all christians .the Mansu ****as are mostly christians but this tribe is a tiny minority arround janjabureh and basse area. a few of them of late embrase islam .when i was in saint georgoe's junior a mansu ****a boy became a muslim and his family went mad . some balantas are also christians .the gambia tribes that are mostly christians are mainly Akus , Manjako , mansu ****a ,some Balantas , some Jolas , a tiny amount of wolof and mandinkas and some mansajang fulas . Emil Kujabe was a close friend of mine when he was a mission school head master ,through him i know most powerful christian native gambians . but a tribal muslim or christian don't exist . we became muslims and christians not vice versa

i dont think Mansuankas are specifically an ethnic group/tribe. if i am correct what they speak is the same as manjago perhaps with a different accent. i think it has to do with their ancestral origins from around Mansoa.

in a similar way it might not be /could be wrong to call Jarrankas or Jahankas or fana-fanas a tribe or seperate group.

i think the suffix - n'ka simply denotes origin
