if gambia becomes an islamic state you can kiss the tourism industry good bye, right now tourism is not in the high figures that it could be, so anything that is a deterrent is not always welcomed, other destinations are coming through are just as intersting for tourist, ghana, and cape verde islands, this is a fact.
right now there are certain things that holidaymakers enjoy that an islamic state would not,
gambiling, casinos, women wearing shorts, alchol, sex outside marriage, think about it this would be under heavier control and restrictions within an islami state.

Jambo bring some interesting thoughts.

I am not sure if the tourism industry would be a valid reason though. Think about the tourism industry.

- It is only seasonal. Limited number of the months, say October to March.
- Let me give you example Cyprius. The price of holiday is same as Gambia in Cyprus. Let us say. 100 per day. In cyprus the big part of this money go to salaries, local products like food etc. And most investment is local capital. In Gambia is not like that. The gambians make very little money from tourism industry. There is no local ownership for tourism industry where money will stay in Gambia. Most investments are European or Lebanase where money may go to out of Gambia.
- Gambia is not producer of tourism products or food etc. Most products are import.
- And when you consider the issues jambo mentioned like gambiling, casinos, women wearing shorts, alchol, sex outside marriage, prostitution, sex business, bumpsters, negative pop culture influence brought by westerners that are negative.
When you calculate the positives tourism brings which is not great deal actually and the negative issues tourism brings, net gain is not great. What do you think?

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

turk, you are right the reason that tourists come to gambia is the sun, sand and beach, if they stop coming a lot of people will be unemployed, you mention that
"When you calculate the positives tourism brings which is not great deal actually and the negative issues tourism brings, net gain is not great. What do you think?", all negative, if you change the attitude of tourism and not cater for this style of tourism it would be okay, or extended the season.
But i ask you this, what would replace the income that tourism brings at present, it might not be much, until gambia develops another industry, it relies on the tourism spend
why do you want it to be an islamic state

I suggest you re-read my posts and have idea about what is my perspective on islamic state. There could be other arguments against the islamic state but not due to the tourims sector we object the islamic state. I still think tourism net benefit to the gambia is not great deal. The idea of tourism should change in Gambia. Instead of focusing big hotels. Bed and Breakfast tourism should be encouraged. Tourism on volunteerism should be expanded. This way, tourism sector would benefit to locals more.

Why not open a new topic to discuss the alternative sectors for Gambia. For example, agriculture is the way to go. Especially organic food production would be one idea.
