Turkey, only democratic and secular muslim nation in the world. The recent crisis in Turkey brings out some interesting issues of 'politics in western world and muslim world'. I believe it would be a good example for Gambia and any other muslim nations that wants to integrate a stable political system.

Turks has years of experience with a government system. From Hun Empire to Ottoman Empire has very stable and complex political system that adopts western democracy since the end of the WW1. It is Secular Democracy. It is young but ever improving system.

It was Ataturk who started the secular democracy in Turkey. Until 50s, there was a single party that advocates secularism and democracy. When they had the first multiple party elections, conservative mass took the government from seculars. That was the first division among Turks in terms of political polarization. Ataturk’s party defended secularism, leftist economic programs and social liberalism. Alternative was conservative, fiscally liberal, social conservatives.

Turkey is a muslim nations, however, Turkish society is divided as any other society. Divisions are religious, ethic and social. Religion is most important factor for the Turkish society. First division is between religious and non-religious masses. Further groups like alewis, shias, sufis and many other sects/tarikats. Ethnicity is important. There are Kurdish, Original Turks, European Turks, Arabic, Assyrians, and Caucasians etc. Especially ultras Turkish and Kurdish nationalism are biggest Turkish ethnicity dividers. Also, socially divisions. Rural population, farmers and urban, modern Turks and rural population who lives in cities neither rural nor urban. There are also strong groups like intellectuals, army, conservative muslim business.

Current crisis is between Conservatives vs seculars. Current governing AKP party very successful in economy, in terms of democracy they are surprisingly more democrat than secular social democrats. They actually did more to join EU than any modernist party. They are kind of socially conservative that adopts liberal economy and democracy. Their presidential candidate Abdullah Gul, is a “good muslim” respected foreign minister.

The secular party cheated the constitution and boycott the presidential elections. They politicised the law. That is true, the law had power to check the legislation. Also, strong army also made a statement in favour of secular. But things changed. Conservatives are now more democrat than secular. They have proven that during EU process. With EU support, they did not back down and now they call the early election.

My prediction AKP will win the election. The cheating of seculars and anti-democratic army statement was not fair and Turks will reward the democracy and AKP. If army don’t try another coup, I would say conservatives will keep the power and Abduallah will became the president.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.
