The conclusion of this commentary is misleading. Aboltion of the Transatlanic Slave Trade was brought about because enslaved Africans fought for their freedom from the time the first African was taken away onboard a slaveship, and in the plantations. Abolition came as a direct result of African resistance. This resistance made slavery untenable for the white plantocracy as Africa s fought throughout the West Indies. Amongst the greatest African enslaved warriors was Toussaint L'Venture who defeated the French then the Spanish, then the British and the French once more. Thereafter declaring Haiti the first Liberated Island from slavery in the West Indies in 1803. There is no doubt Wilberforce finally got the Abolition on the statute in 1807. However let's not be fooled Wilberforce was not for the emancipation of enslaved Africans. The British by 1807 were preparing themselves for the next phase of slavery with a new word to call it colonalism. This new phase was even more profittable because Africans no longer needed to be transported, feed and punished at the masters expense. But more money could be made and saved by enslaving Africans at home in Africa. Therefore perpetuating enslavement from generation to generation after all it had worked to a certain extent in the America's why not in Africa?
Since 1807 what has really changed? That's a good question when we consider that Britain takes £11 trillion from Africa, and the rest of the world takes a healthy £22 trillion every year? Whilst we Africans still ponder who we are, where are we going, or where do we come from. Yes, it's really about time us Africans emanicipate ourselves from mental slavery because none but ourselves can free our minds.(Bob Marley) It's also important that we reflect on our history long before the Slave Trade to the days when African's circuminavigated the globe. When Europeans still presumed the world was square. When Africans left the Senegambian coastline bound for the America's to trade, and establish kingdoms in Mexico and Panama. We have such a rich history that has been whitewashed over. 2007 is also a year when many white Europeans will also start to question their history to determine how much lies have they been told about it. As we look to the future 07 can only be a time of awakening from the malaise of spell which was cast 500 years ago and it's time for that spell to be broken! And Africans start to manage their own resources and stop subsidising the rest of the world because our people and continent need our resources which we've been giving away virtually for free!!!

Wilberforce was a religious man and believed in the freedom of slaves from a moral and religious persepective. He was motivated by his belief in God and thought the slave trade was morally indefensible.
Many other methodists and quakers believed similar things to Wilberforce. They looked for the good in people and tried to help them.
As well as the slave trade they tried to improve the lot of working class english people who were working in bad conditions in factories and mines.
Sister Omega if Africans went to Mexico and Panama is that a good thing? Or is that colonialism too?
What has Britain taken from Gambia for nothing?
My understanding is that Gambia is a very inconsistent producer ie quantity and quality.
Hotels need a good supply of vegetables and fruit. They often end up importing it alot of airmiles. It would be best if Gambia could be self sufficient and produce what it needs.
The peanut trade world wide is big big business. Gambia produces peanuts, but nt to consistent quantities and qualities, the dutch traders would rather go to south america and china. Gambian peanuts were poisioned because of the residue on the land from treatments. This put traders off.
Being self sufficient in produce that the tourist trade will require is a good business to get into. Organic and reliable. If Gambia can get that sorted they could make a good living. |

Trades people.
I am living in York a tourist city.
The best way for men to make a living is to train in a trade that is needed. Gambians seem to want to study for a degree and leave the country whereas senegalese seem more practical and 'run' the country. My advice to anyone in Gambia with teenage boys is learn them a trade. Plumber, electrician, builder, mechanic etc..... The infrastructure of the country needs these people and they can earn a living.
My advice to Gambians is dont sit back and let senegalese earn all the money. Get a trade, make a business and then you will be in a position to help your family. |

Bev it wasn't colonialism it was trade, not not trade in human flesh. Africans went and contributed to the betterment of these societies without trying to subjogate them in anyway.
