press freedom is always top billing but i douth if there is any free press any where in the globe.
i was reading john pilger's book and he made one complain which is ''people think that press in the west are free but they are not entirely free. they follow official lines or if not .he said look at news buletin dayly it's all the same. news media is now largely control by large sharks ,like mudorch and so many others ,so editorail freedom is largely interfared with.
he said also that when press freedom is discussed people look at the third world but he said the third world don't know how to control the press without being violent or dragonian.
i can't dispute this statement.he won several awards for best journalism so the man knows what he is taliking about.
i watched with horrow last night night an anchor man jereme paxman regretting asking a diplomat a question over the release of the british sailors .it seems journalist are afraid of falling foul of the politicains .this is what two legendary journalist of the past always complain about. christopher mathews and micheal adams.
WHAT HAS GONE WRONG ? A BATTLE FOR THE CONTROL OF PEOPLES MIND OR WHAT? READ THE BRITISH SUN ,MIRROR OR TIMES BASICAALLY THE SAME. NO CONTROVERSY .
READ THE NEWYORK POST ,WALLSTREET JOURNAL ETC THE SAME REPORTING .
FOR our own draculars ,they lock you up. should they too adopt the western style of de-bereifing journalist about news ? that may help ease up the tyranny. what happen to independent media ?

Dalton, i read John Pilger's book a week ago and i could not agree more with you. Its scary but free press is a myth.
I strongly suggest you read Phillipe Sand's Lawless world. Phillipe is a respected internal lawyer with huge wealth of knowledge but also a witness to the criminality that is legalise. |

sonita ,i am santanfara not dalton .you are right free press is just a myth. most journalist now believe they need to be in line with the views of the queen and country so any truth that may be unfavourable to the establishment is highly sensored. i read a report as well that directly indicated that the bbc give more coverage to the pro-war lobby than the anti-war. par time alocated only 2% was given to people or mp's who voiced there disapproval to blairs wars. and america is even worst now a days. that is why i suggested that the third world leaders need to adapt to modern climate .let the journalist have access ,but denying them lawful information only creat bad blood. i hardly watch news on tv .it is just commentery not news . in england the independent is a good paper. even the respected times is warmongering and extrime right . |

free Press has always been a myth. Why do you think we only see the same news bulletins over and over again throughout the day? We all know there are much more things happen globally than what we are shown. After all if there was true freedom of press how would politicians try to control our minds?

Dalton am caught up with work these days and sometimes i leap into the site to nourish myself. I just want to put my hands up,in my small tiny little space in the world, I have resigned to the fact that the truth hardly survives, that democracy and free press as it is today is flawed and perhaps very poisonous to human existence and values.
Democracy has been transform into a spin doctrine, where modification of facts into fiction and most importantly the use of so call free press to repeat the muddied and spinned facts into the minds of the ordinary folks has become a daily reality. Opinion suddenly becomes facts, spin becomes mode of operation of governments and political institutions, fear becomes the instrument of governments to degrade human values and extra judiciary killings and daily deaths becomes acceptable and normal.
Yes, i can hear you say i have thrown away the towel, but i haven't, I strongly believe in the fundamentals core human value but i know that majority of the world are being sold a different story day in and day out, I know am now in the minority, bloggers on the internet because the main media (Rupert Murdock's empire)is not interested in my story, the rules of today democracy means my ideas will not survive in the market place. So realistically my chances are very very very slim or if not impossible.

i am gutted . the part as well of allied freeing prisoners in poland . man is capable of many evils.
apparently the freed captured british sailors are selling their story . for once i aggrree with the torys . this is unmilitary like. |

We in developing world face the fundamental question, do we join the spin doctrine of mass deception or can we uphold the high moral ground of honesty and fairness. The later is very attractive to humanity and human values but very difficult to practice and the former destruction to every principle of human dignity, but is an easy option, as the saying goes if you cant beat them, join them.
But let put it into proper perspective, imagine Jammeh's brutal regime getting grip of effective spin, with the help of folks like Alaisdair Campbell from Downing Street, with one nation radio station and one national tv, the results will brain wash the most intelligent and informed Gambian.
Sometimes i wonder if am just a dreamer in believing what i believe. |

I didn't read the book but I know that the Western freedom of press is more or less a myth.
In Western democracies, it is usually not - like e.g. in African dictatorships - the government who suppresses the media directly. But:
A) Any magazine, private TV station etc. depends on its advertisement clients, among them many bigger companies. If you are an important ad client, you can tell them what to write, and what not.
B) The big companies are the ones who own the political power in a Western (= capitalist) democracy. Look at the USA - do you need a better example? But Europe is also not bad: E.g. in Germany, companies even make their own laws - imagine that lobbyists have their offices in the German Parliament, and German politicians let them draft laws...! NO JOKE!!!!
C) Press companies like Murdoch or Bertelsmann follow the logics of any other big company. This implies certain political tendencies.
Freedom of press is nothing owned by one political system, while others lack it. It is, fairness presumed as the rule even an absolutely free press should follow, something we still and permanently need to fight for.
